Specialty Physiotherapist - (Chronic Pelvic Pain Physiotherapy)

Our Service is one of the few specialist centres across the country delivering clinical excellence in the highly specialised field of chronic pelvic pain. The role will allow you will work alongside a close-knit multidisciplinary team comprising of:



  • Physiotherapists
  • Clinical Psychologists
  • GPs with specialist interest in pelvic pain
  • Nurses

The aim is to provide a responsive, high quality and person-centred service to maximise the quality and experience of life for women with pelvic pain. The service consists of an adult and adolescent arm (patients from menarche to 25 years) giving clinicians the exciting and unique experience to work with patients at differing life points.


The role of Band 7 Specialist Physiotherapist is a critical part of the chronic pelvic pain service. You will work closely alongside the professions listed above, providing your expert knowledge to perform assessments and provide treatment to those required. You will be involved in delivering treatment in both one-to-one and group settings as well as providing joint courses and appointments together with psychology and attending MDT clinics.


Alongside the clinical work, you will also be involved in supervising and training other team members and will have the opportunity to undertake quality improvement projects.


Main duties of the job

  • Be a critical part of the multidisciplinary team in Chronic Pelvic Pain working in collaborative fashion with the lead consultants and other members of the team.
  • Perform advanced assessment of patients including those with highly complex presentations to form a diagnosis and treatment plan, carried out as an autonomous practitioner.
  • Be responsible for supervising, teaching and appraising qualified physiotherapists and students within the pelvic pain service.
  • Support leadership of the team as required.
  • Lead and support others in undertaking quality improvement projects to enhance the quality and efficiency of the service.
  • Implement service changes alongside the team and monitor these through clear standards of practice and good use of data and performance informatics.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own professional activities.
  • Undertake specialist assessment of patients, as an autonomous practitioner, including highly complex presentations.
  • Deploy advanced clinical reasoning skills and evidence-based practice to determine appropriate person-centred management plans.
  • Be highly competent in assessing a wide range of gynaecological, urological, colorectal and musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Be competent in understanding complex chronic pain and its relation to the pelvis; apply this knowledge during assessments and treatment plans.
  • Be aware of local services related to chronic pelvic pain and refer accordingly.
  • Interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical information to form accurate diagnoses.
  • Formulate accurate prognoses and recommend best course of intervention, developing comprehensive discharge and continuing care plans.
  • Be responsible for own and occasionally the team's patient care plans and provide specialist advice to junior members.
  • Continually reassess patients to progress treatments effectively.
  • Assess a patient's capacity to understand and obtain valid, informed consent.
  • Coordinate interventions which may include other disciplines.
  • Advise and educate patients and their carers, and other healthcare professionals to promote self‑care and management.
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information to patients, carers and staff, accounting for barriers to communication.
  • Actively lead liaison with the multidisciplinary team and advise other relevant professionals on patient care.
  • Ensure effective communication with all disciplines involved in patient care, both in hospital and in the community.
  • Appraise and manage clinical risks within own caseload and that of the designated team.
  • Maintain accurate written records, including progress and discharge reports.
  • Attend meetings, seminars and case conferences as appropriate.
  • Use specialist knowledge to refer to other health disciplines as required.
  • Demonstrate physical ability to carry out assessment and interventions, including manual therapy techniques.
  • Demonstrate highly developed dexterity, coordination and palpatory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients.
  • Be sensitive to the needs of patients with difficult and embarrassing conditions and respond accordingly.

Management Responsibilities

  • Ensure Trust and Department policies are adhered to.
  • Incorporate quality standards into the policy and practice of the team.
  • Contribute to managerial matters of the department, including development and implementation of departmental policies.
  • Comply with all Trust policies and procedures and Health and Safety at Work Act, including infection control measures.
  • Report all complaints and accidents to the immediate senior member of staff and document accordingly.
  • Responsible for daily and operational management, supervision and coordination of the pelvic pain physiotherapy team.
  • Participate in the Trust Appraisal Scheme.
  • Attend and actively participate in departmental staff and peer group meetings.
  • Maintain accurate record‑keeping system for own clinical caseload and ensure team members maintain department standards.
  • Collate and analyse service data to support the wider understanding of the team's performance.
  • Effectively manage a caseload of patients, prioritise clinical work and balance other responsibilities.
  • Provide efficient physiotherapy service within the clinical area by managing team members and their caseloads.
  • Monitor referrals and ongoing treatments to ensure appropriate decision making.
  • Resolve informal complaints and be acquainted with the Trust's formal complaints procedure.
  • Impart complex information to small groups or training sessions.
  • Manage potentially stressful, upsetting or emotional situations empathetically.
  • Ensure effective communication with senior staff and timely communication with the Head of Therapies.

Education and Professional Development

  • Deliver and support specialised teaching to members of the therapy team and wider MDT.
  • Maintain personal professional development, keep abreast of new clinical practices, attend specialist continuing education programmes and external courses.
  • Maintain a CPD portfolio reflecting personal professional development.
  • Initiate and maintain contacts with local and national clinical interest groups, share and disseminate knowledge.
  • Convey complex knowledge of techniques, biomechanics, anatomy and physiology to patients and staff.
  • Supervise and lead the professional development of physiotherapists on rotation through the clinical area.
  • Train physiotherapy staff, assistants and students on placement within the clinical area.
  • Supervise undergraduate physiotherapy students and liaise with academic institutions.
  • Support and advise less experienced clinical educators.

Research and Audit

  • Participate in departmental clinical audit plan and relevant research/evaluation projects.
  • Supervise staff in delivery of quality improvement projects and disseminate findings.
  • Keep abreast of evidence-based practice in Pelvic Pain and Pelvic Health Physiotherapy through reading and training.
  • Ensure knowledge of national and local standards and monitor quality as appropriate.

Person Specification
Education / Qualifications

  • Ongoing BSc in Physiotherapy or equivalent.
  • Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Experience

  • Experience working in women's and men's health physiotherapy.
  • Experience in working with patients who have chronic pain.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Highly competent clinician with specialist skills in Chronic Pain management.
  • Advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology related to Chronic Pelvic Pain patients.
  • Advanced musculoskeletal assessment skills including the lumbar spine and pelvic region.
  • Advanced assessment and rehabilitation skills for complex pelvic floor dysfunction.
  • Advanced clinical reasoning skills in women's and men's health.
  • Advanced knowledge of complex bladder and bowel dysfunction within Pain syndromes.
  • Excellent verbal, non‑verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to keep legible and accurate notes in English.
  • Ability to present information in a clear and logical manner.
  • Presentation and teaching skills.
  • Ability to lead and motivate others within the team.
  • Ability to carry out moderate physical effort throughout the working day and concurrent activities.
  • Highly Professional demeanour.
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development including attendance at recent postgraduate courses relevant to the clinical field.
