Specialist Physiotherapist – Respiratory Medicine / Surgery / Cardiology / Intensive Care

Hours: Full time, 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working


The Therapy Department is looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and highly motivated Band 6 Specialist Physiotherapist to join our inpatient team in the specialty areas of cardio‑respiratory, critical care, surgery and respiratory medicine. As part of the MDT team, you will provide professional clinical leadership as a specialist practitioner.


We work closely with a variety of professions including Speech and Language Therapists, dietitians, pharmacists and Occupational Therapists as well as our nursing and medical colleagues. Educating the wider MDT on the role of Physiotherapy will be an essential component of this post, along with the development of key roles such as Assistant Practitioners. You will work closely with the Team Leads to support service developments.

Main duties of the job

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to teach, supervise and appraise band 5 physiotherapists, Therapy Support Workers and students.
  • Provide professional clinical leadership as a specialist practitioner within the MDT.
  • Demonstrate a high level of clinical reasoning, organisational and prioritisation skills to manage an acute caseload effectively.
  • Develop and participate in service developments, supported by the practice education team and funded CPD.
  • Participate in the respiratory on‑call rota, including weekends and bank holidays as required.
  • Maintain current HCPC registration as a Physiotherapist and NHS experience.

Qualifications and knowledge

  • Physiotherapy Degree or equivalent professional qualification
  • Registered with UK Health Care Professions Council
  • Evidence of post‑registration CPD
  • Sound therapeutic & clinical knowledge
  • Member of CSP
  • Membership of Specialist Interest group(s)
  • Knowledge of physiotherapy best practice for a range of conditions
  • Knowledge of appropriate red flags for relevant patient groups

Experience

  • Relevant experience in an NHS hospital setting
  • Appropriate post‑registration experience in Respiratory medicine, Intensive Care, General Surgery and Cardiology
  • Sound therapeutic & clinical knowledge
  • Active member of multi‑disciplinary team
  • Undertaken project within area e.g. best practice project, guideline benchmarking, audit
  • Supervision & training of assistants, junior members of staff and students

Skills

  • Ability to build and develop effective working relationships
  • Ability to keep accurate and legible patient notes
  • Ability to work under pressure and to organise and prioritise own case load accordingly
  • Able to appropriately apply a range of treatment approaches
  • Good personal organisation and proven time management skills
  • Practice evidence based therapy
  • High level of IST including presentation of IST, with the ability to teach other staff including juniors, assistants & students
  • Ability to cope with unpredictable and emergency situations
  • Ability to interpret, analyse and respond effectively to complex information
  • Ability to appreciate the sensitivity and complexity of patient cultures and be able to provide a service appropriate to individual needs
  • Experience of using electronic patient records
  • Experience of undertaking 1:1 sessions and appraisals with juniors, assistants & students

Personal and people development

  • Be able to reflect and critically appraise own performance and acknowledge own needs and limitations
  • Documented evidence of continuing professional development in clinical fields relevant to this post
  • Experience of managing and developing colleagues

Communication

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to influence others
