Building Services Mechanical Design Engineer

Reports to: Design Manager


We are delighted to announce we have a new vacancy for experienced Building Services Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Howorth team. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering the full mechanical design lifecycle of healthcare projects, from concept through to completion.


Key duties include conducting site surveys, producing detailed feasibility reports, and developing coordinated designs for mechanical building systems such as HVAC, public health services, medical gas installations, BMS controls, and associated building elements.


The role also involves preparing comprehensive service drawings, including equipment layouts, manufacturing details, equipment schedules, and project specifications. In addition, the candidate will support the Pre‑Construction Team by contributing to the development of both conceptual and technical proposals.


Key Responsibilities

As part of your role at Howorth, your responsibilities will include:



  • Generate design concepts and solutions to meet project and customer requirements, providing evidence of compliance.
  • Prepare and present design and construction scheme packs, including engineering details for internal reviews and customer forums.
  • Conduct site surveys and construction inspections, producing detailed reports as required.
  • Take responsibility for design and coordination of all Mechanical and Electrical services and equipment installations.
  • Collaborate and innovate independently or with Engineers/Draughtsmen to develop ideas into detailed schemes, supported by calculations and compliance reports to demonstrate compliance with relevant industry standards, highlighting deviations and risks where necessary.
  • Deliver high-quality service to customers, on time and with minimal supervision.
  • Liaise with technical specialists and suppliers (e.g., BMS, Medical Gases, AHUs, Air Equipment, Theatre Control Panels, Lighting etc).
  • Perform peer checks on work produced by other Engineers and Draughtsmen.
  • Prepare and approve drawings, ensuring they meet required standards, reflect design intent accurately, and define construction and inspection requirements.
  • Support the Lead Design Manager with additional tasks and activities as required.

Qualifications & Preferred Skills

  • Education: Master’s Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Building Services Engineering/ HVAC.
  • Standards Knowledge: Working knowledge of UK standards, with specific familiarity with Healthcare Technical Memorandums.
  • Industry Awareness: Fully conversant with the latest engineering design concepts, standards, and disciplines.
  • Health & Safety: Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation related to design, including incorporation of risk assessments

Desired Experience

  • Software Skills: Fully experienced and trained in AutoCAD 2D and Revit.
  • Design Expertise: Proven track record in design development from concept through construction, with strong technical ability to apply knowledge and experience to solve complex engineering problems.
  • Project Experience: Experience working on a range of multi-disciplinary projects, specifically in healthcare environment.
  • Product Knowledge: Understanding of Howorth products and their design requirements.
  • Interpret Design Requirements Quickly: Understand and translate requirements from Clients / Users Specifications into actionable design solutions.
  • Creative Problem‑Solving: Formulate innovative ideas to address design challenges and meet customer expectations.
  • Collaborate Effectively: Communicate with and support the Design Manager to agree on design schemes and technical concepts, ensuring timely delivery of design work.
  • Project Liaison: Work closely with Project Managers to provide technical support, conduct site inspections, and witness installations.
  • Maintain Professionalism: Demonstrate a positive attitude under challenging circumstances and act as a role model for high standards of work and behaviour.
  • Plan and Prioritise: Organise and manage workload effectively to meet deadlines and align with company objectives.
