🚆 Principal & Senior Mechanical Engineers – Rolling Stock

📍 Derby, UK, Hybrid

We’re supporting a well-established rail engineering consultancy to appoint an experienced Principal & Senior Mechanical Engineer to work across a diverse portfolio of passenger, freight, metro, and light rail rolling stock projects.

This is a technically senior role offering real ownership across the full project lifecycle — from feasibility and design through to integration, assurance, testing, and entry into service — with exposure to major operators, ROSCOs, OEMs, and public bodies.


The role

You’ll lead the delivery of mechanical engineering solutions, providing high-quality consultancy while ensuring compliance with UK and EU railway standards.

Key elements include:

  • Mechanical systems integration and vehicle modification projects
  • Train control and protection systems upgrades
  • Production and approval of design packs, schematics, calculations, and test documentation
  • Assurance against standards such as TSIs / NTSNs and EN 50126 (Functional Safety)
  • Mentoring engineers and leading technical work packages
  • Supporting bids, estimating, and customer engagement


What we’re looking for

  • Strong Mechanical engineering background with rolling stock experience
  • Proven delivery of Mechanical systems integration and vehicle modifications
  • Solid understanding of railway standards, approvals, and assurance processes
  • Experience working across multi-disciplinary engineering projects
  • Confident communicator with the ability to engage customers and stakeholders


Desirable:

  • Chartered Engineer (or working towards)
  • Experience in delivering modifications and upgrades on UK fleets; integration with systems (HVAC, doors, braking, interiors).
  • Exposure to bidding, estimating, or early-stage project work
