Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday (07:00 - 16:30)


About the Role

Speedy, the UK's leading hire provider, is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our Newport depot team. This is a key role within our operations, responsible for ensuring a wide range of mechanical and access equipment is safe, compliant, and ready for hire.


You will play a vital part in maintaining asset reliability, protecting customer safety, and supporting operational efficiency by ensuring only fully compliant, well‑maintained equipment leaves the depot.


Your Responsibilities

  • Inspecting, testing, servicing and repairing mechanical and access equipment in line with LOLER, PUWER and Speedy standards.
  • Carrying out pre‑hire and post‑hire inspections to ensure equipment is safe and fit for purpose.
  • Diagnosing mechanical faults and completing repairs efficiently and accurately.
  • Completing service and inspection records using internal systems and Microsoft Office.
  • Prioritising equipment to meet depot operational needs and customer demand.
  • Maintaining excellent health and safety standards within the workshop and on customer sites.
  • Supporting asset availability by working closely with depot and operations teams.
  • Attending customer sites when required to carry out servicing, breakdown response or inspections.
  • Delivering excellent customer service and representing Speedy in a professional manner.
  • Actively supporting Speedy's ESG Strategy - Decade to Deliver through safe, sustainable and responsible working practices.

What You'll Need

  • Previous engineering or workshop experience, ideally within mechanical, plant, access, lifting or hire equipment environments.
  • Good understanding of health and safety standards and compliance requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail and a safety‑first mindset.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • A proactive approach with strong problem‑solving skills.
  • A positive work ethic and commitment to high standards.
