About the Role

Joining our Laboratory team, the Trainee Laboratory Technician will support the safe and efficient running of the lab while learning core skills across mechanical testing, metallography, microscopy, basic machining and sample preparation, and data entry into LIMS. This is an entry‑level position designed for someone with practical aptitude and attention to detail who wants to develop into a fully competent Laboratory Technician. You’ll be supported, work to clear procedures and quality standards, and carry out tasks under supervision until signed off via the Mettis skills matrix.

As a condition of employment successful candidates are required to satisfy ITAR (International Traffic In Arms Regulations) compliance and must fulfil the following before commencing this role:
i. Currently hold the legal Right to Work in the UK
ii. Fulfil a DBS clearance
iii. Provide a consistent 5-year UK domicile
iv. Pass Drugs & Alcohol screening at the start of their Mettis employment

ResponsibilitiesCore Responsibilities

Assist with preparation and labelling of mechanical and metallographic test specimens to defined standards

Perform laboratory testing (mechanical, metallographic, microscopy, chemical, hydrogen) once qualified via the skills matrix

Support metallographic preparation and basic microscopy observations with guidance

Support routine release testing and first article testing activities

Perform accurate data entry into LIMS and maintain traceable records

Monitor consumables and stock levels and raise replenishment requests

Maintain good housekeeping (5S) and assist with equipment care

Follow SOPs, work instructions and quality standards

Support first article activities and documentation

Provide general support to senior laboratory staff

Safety Responsibilities

Comply with all EHS and legislative requirements

Follow COSHH and safe handling procedures

Participate in risk assessments and report hazards

Follow manual handling and equipment safety practices

Quality Responsibilities

Deliver work to the highest standard with right‑first‑time focus

Rigorously follow lab procedures with accuracy and traceability

Maintain clear, complete records to support audits

Delivery Responsibilities

Complete tasks within required timeframes and to required technical specifications

Ensure timely completion of release testing and support on-time customer delivery

Cost Responsibilities

Support waste‑reduction and improvement initiatives

Handle materials correctly to avoid damage

People Responsibilities

Maintain professional written and verbal communication with internal stakeholders

Work collaboratively with colleagues across the laboratory

Comply with HR policies

Business Responsibilities

Act as an ambassador for Mettis.

Role model the company’s Vision, Mission, and Values.

Qualifications

GCSEs including Maths, English, and Science (or equivalent)

Degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Materials, or Science / relevant subject (or equivalent experience)

Required Skills

Demonstrable practical aptitude

Ability to follow detailed procedures

IT literacy including Microsoft Office

Experience in a lab or testing environment

Familiarity with hand tools or sample preparation equipment

Knowledge of mechanical testing techniques (tensile, impact, fracture toughness, bend)

Experience operating lathes, milling machines, CNC equipment, or metallographic preparation tools

Exposure to LIMS or production systems
