Would you love to be part of a professional Engineering Team that maintains and repairs one of the most modern fleets in the UK?

How about doing it in one of the most scenic places in the UK?

If that sounds like something you want to be involved in, we'd love to have you on board—and we'll give you all the training and development you need to get to where you want to go!

Stagecoach Highlands operates 150 vehicles over 6 sites and our Portree team are looking for people from a background in vehicle mechanical engineering to be part of our growing team. You may be in a truck/HGV, rail, light commercial or automotive setting at the moment, but fancy a change of vehicle to enhance your skill-set.

Likewise, if you've got PCV experience, you'll still find new opportunities to learn given the variety of modern fleet.

Our Portree depot operates a small range of vehicles from Merc Sprinters up to Volvo B8 Evoras and Volvo coaches for our CityLink operation, and we invest millions in new buses so you'll have some state of the art machines to work on!

You've probably seen some of our vehicles driving around the Isle of Skye, transporting our fantastic customers across the island and beyond every year.

Those customers rely on our services to get them to work, to the high street, to hospitals, to days away and nights out—and as part of our Engineering Team you'll be a key part in making sure our vehicles are in tip-top condition to do just that. It's a really important role within our Depot, so we'll make sure you're looked after as well as our vehicles are!

Don't worry if you've not worked on these vehicles before (or indeed buses) — we'll train you on everything you need to know, and you'll be supported by a great team of fellow Mechanics, Electricians, Technicians and Engineering Managers who all pull together to do a brilliant job.

And interestingly it's not all depot-based work – you could well find yourself out and about dealing with vehicle issues on the road, so it won't always be the same four walls you're looking at.

Responsibilities

Be part of the Engineering Team ensuring vehicles are maintained and repaired to keep our services running safely and reliably.

Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues, support on-road vehicle issues when required, and contribute to a safe, efficient depot operation.

Qualifications

Background in vehicle mechanical engineering (truck/HGV, rail, light commercial, automotive) or related field.

PCV experience welcomed; willingness to learn and adapt to Stagecoach's modern fleet.

Full training provided; ability to work as part of a team of Mechanics, Electricians, Technicians and Engineering Managers.

Benefits & Perks
  • Job Security — long-standing company with plans to continue for years.
  • Safe Environment — boots, overalls and specialist equipment provided.
  • Free Travel — on our buses for you and a companion on days off.
  • Great Income & Benefits — competitive salary, good pension scheme.
  • Gym Membership — eligible for Highlife Highlands facilities.
  • Promotions — opportunities to develop and progress within the engineering career path.

How Many Edge Computing Tools Do You Need to Know to Get an Edge Computing Job?

If you’re trying to start or grow a career in edge computing, it can feel like you’re navigating a maze of tools, frameworks and platforms — Kubernetes, Docker, IoT frameworks, AWS Greengrass, Azure IoT Edge, OpenShift, TinyML toolkits, networking orchestration, real-time streaming frameworks, and on it goes. Scroll job boards and community forums and it’s easy to conclude that unless you master every buzzword imaginable, you’ll never get a job. Here’s the honest truth most edge computing hiring managers won’t necessarily say out loud: 👉 They don’t hire you because you know every edge computing tool — they hire you because you can solve real system problems using the tools you know. Tools matter, yes — but only when they support clear outcomes: reliable systems, performance at scale, secure edge deployments and real business value. So how many edge computing tools do you actually need to know to secure a job? For most edge computing roles, the answer is fewer than you think — and a lot clearer when sorted by fundamentals and roles. This guide shows you what matters, what doesn’t, and how to focus your time wisely so you come across as capable, confident and employable.

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Edge Computing Job Applications (UK Guide)

In today’s fast-evolving tech landscape, edge computing is one of the most sought-after fields — blending distributed systems, embedded systems, networking, cloud, IoT, data and real-time processing. But that also means hiring managers are highly selective. They scan applications fast and look for signals of relevance, impact, technical depth and real-world delivery long before they read every line. This guide demystifies what hiring managers in edge computing look for first in your application — so you can tailor your CV, portfolio and cover letter to jump out of the stack. Whether you’re targeting edge systems roles, embedded IoT edge jobs, edge-native data roles, edge platform engineering or edge-AI positions, this checklist will help you position your experience in a way hiring managers can trust immediately.

The Skills Gap in Edge Computing Jobs: What Universities Aren’t Teaching

Edge computing is rapidly moving from niche concept to critical infrastructure. As organisations deploy connected devices, sensors, autonomous systems and real-time analytics, processing data closer to where it is generated has become essential. From smart cities and manufacturing to healthcare, transport, defence and telecommunications, edge computing underpins systems where latency, reliability and resilience matter. Demand for edge computing skills across the UK is rising steadily — yet employers consistently report difficulty finding candidates who are genuinely job-ready. Despite growing interest and academic coverage, universities are not fully preparing graduates for real edge computing jobs. This article explores the edge computing skills gap in depth: what universities teach well, what they consistently miss, why the gap exists, what employers actually want, and how jobseekers can bridge the divide to build sustainable careers in edge computing.
