We are looking to recruit a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our Birmingham Industry & Buildings team, to become an integral member of our skilled Building Services team and assist with our growing workload. You will manage and deliver a range of projects from industrial and commercial clients, from inception of defining a client’s design brief to inspections, specifications, design, and management of projects. You will be flexible and dynamic with the ability to assist in the development of our growing team. This role requires someone who can deliver quality, robust deliverables on time and within budget. Our projects cover a wide range of sectors including industrial, logistics, people buildings, food & beverage and automotive, among others.

Main work areas and role objectives include:

  • Manage and deliver the mechanical building services work packages in multiple concurrent projects, either in the UK or internationally.
  • Provide technical leadership on projects.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring and coaching to design engineers.
  • Promote and deliver the use of Sustainable and LZC technologies.
  • Lead energy in-use compliance and thermal analysis as required to comply with local mandatory standards.
  • Promote the implementation of digital, automation and parametric methods of design on projects.

Technical development and management of design projects:

  • Preparation of designs, from initial concepts through to detailed designs.
  • Production of design calculations including using 3D modelling software, checking and reviewing calculations produced by others.
  • Producing sketch drawings/details for drawing/modelling by others and complete checking and reviewing of these prior to issue.
  • Preparation of specifications, and assistance with contract documents.
  • Carry out inspections and surveys, preparation of reports and reporting.

Commercial and management duties:

  • Assisting in proposal writing, marketing and business development as required.
  • Supporting the commercial and technical management of projects, ensuring profitability.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • A BEng (Hons) or MEng in Building Services / Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 5–10 years of relevant working experience in mechanical design.
  • Chartered or Incorporated status.
  • Good knowledge of standard practices in the design and construction of relevant sector.
  • Good understanding of sector-specific daily (operational) business of clients.
  • Entrepreneurial, result-oriented, proactive individual with a positive, flexible and problem-solving attitude.
  • Ability to perform well in a multidisciplinary team, often with international colleagues.
  • Excellent communication skills towards colleagues and clients.
  • Good project management skills.
  • Knowledge and practical experience of specialist mechanical building services design and modelling software including Autodesk Revit, MagiCAD/StabiCAD, IES Virtual Environment, and NBS Create.
