Veterans in Edge Computing: A Military‑to‑Civilian Pathway into Low‑Latency Tech Careers

In an era where milliseconds mean mission success, data processing is shifting from central clouds to the network’s edge—on factory floors, ship bridges, and battlefield vehicles. Analysts at IDC predict the UK edge‑computing market will hit £12 billion by 2027, driven by 5G multi‑access edge computing (MEC), autonomous systems, and real‑time AI. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is already trialling Project NELSON and Army Warfighting Experiment edge nodes to give commanders AI‑enhanced situational awareness at the tactical edge. Veterans—seasoned in distributed operations, secure comms, and hardened hardware—are tailor‑made for this low‑latency revolution. This guide shows you how to translate your military skill set into civilian edge‑computing language, tap MoD transition funding, and land roles designing the next generation of near‑device compute platforms.
