Mechanical Engineering Manager

Join the team at Serco as a Mechanical Engineering Manager at Darent Valley Hospital. The role is permanent, full‑time (37.5 hours Monday‑Friday) and offers a competitive salary plus Serco benefits.


As the Mechanical Engineering Manager you will play a crucial role in managing the mechanical engineering element of the Hospital, ensuring statutory compliance for all mechanical systems on site.


Main Accountabilities

  • Manage allocated specialist service contracts to meet Serco’s statutory, mandatory, and contractual obligations.
  • Oversee the allocated annual planned preventative maintenance schedule for all mechanical engineering services, ensuring compliance and high workmanship standards.
  • Implement and adhere to procedures outlined in the company’s Quality Assurance & Health & Safety Policies.
  • Prepare and review maintenance procedures for plant and equipment, minimising unavailability.
  • Produce an annual planned maintenance schedule and task instructions for all mechanical assets and services.
  • Supervise the delivery of Statutory Compliance maintenance task obligations and support accurate evidence of compliance.
  • Review and validate completed planned and reactive tasks, reschedule and procure specialist contractors and materials as required.
  • Participate in the preparation of the Annual Lifecycle Programme, identifying plant/services which may compromise service delivery.
  • Support the preparation of specifications and manage delivery of Mechanical minor new works and update record drawings.
  • Assist in the development and testing of contingency plans for Mechanical services with the Head of Estates.
  • Provide technical and managerial support in the delivery of capital schemes (pre‑ and post‑design evaluation, on‑site supervision).
  • Deputise for the Head of Estates and represent the Estates department when required.
  • Liaise with the Electrical Engineering Manager and other Services Managers.
  • Act as Authorised/Responsible Person for MGPS, Pressure systems, and water systems.
  • Participate in the Estates on‑call service, preparing and distributing a daily critical plant report.
  • Provide monthly performance data and reports to the senior management team.
  • Coordinate working shift resources to deliver planned and reactive tasks efficiently.
  • Conduct staff annual and periodic performance and feedback reviews, implementing training and development plans.
  • Approve shift timesheets for directly employed and agency staff, ensuring correct payment processing.
  • Attend designated service working group meetings and complete assigned actions.

What You Will Need

  • Must be mechanically qualified, preferably with experience in a hospital environment.
  • Must have held AP duties for Medical Gas and Pressure Systems previously in a hospital environment.
  • Must have held RP duties for Water Systems previously in a hospital environment.
  • Must have demonstrable knowledge of typical mechanical systems found within a hospital environment, including sterilisers and washers.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of CAFM systems.
  • Knowledge of financial reporting desired.
  • Must be able to write technical reports.
  • Basic IT skills required.

Additional Features To The Role

  • The holder must be available to carry out on‑call duties on a rostered basis and be able to attend site out of hours, within 45 minutes.
  • The role may require the holder to visit areas that have patients; discretion is therefore required at all times and patient privacy and dignity will be at the forefront of everything that they do.
  • Occasionally the job holder may need to visit the mortuary for work reasons and must be aware of this requirement.
