We are recruiting for:

  • 2 Locum Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists
  • Fixed-term contracts, ideal for those seeking flexibility and the chance to work in a vibrant, supportive environment.

Main duties of the job

Your role will involve:



  • Providing perioperative TOE services.
  • Providing evidence-based care
  • Working clinically in cardiothoracic critical care.
  • Working collaboratively with a variety of colleagues as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Covering on-call across our cardiothoracic theatres, cardiac critical care and cardiology intervention services - so ideally you should live within 10 miles of Basildon Hospital, or 30 minutes travelling time.
  • Developing your interests and specialisation within cardiothoracic anaesthesia, & Critical Care including active participation in research programmes

Job responsibilities

  • GMC registered, with FRCA (or equivalent)
  • Experience in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and critical care
  • Commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork, teaching, and research
  • Enthusiasm for service development and innovation
  • For the substantive post: a keen interest in thoracic anaesthesia is highly desirable

Person Specification – Essential

  • GMC registration
  • Training in both general and cardiothoracic critical care, ALS or ATLS. (at least Intermediate level as per RCOA curriculum)
  • Training and qualifications in other medical specialty (e.g. FICM, MRCP, MRCS, FRCS).
  • A minimum of one year of continuous experience in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and Intensive Care equivalent to advanced level training as per RCOA curriculum.

Person Specification – Desirable

  • On Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT from the date of interview
  • Membership of a national specialty organisation (e.g. ACTA)
  • Accreditation in perioperative TOE
  • ITU experience
  • Significant experience in cardiothoracic surgery as consultant
