Applications are invited for a Clinical Scientist to join the dynamic Radiotherapy Physics group at The Christie. The successful applicant will ideally be HCPC registered, but final‑year STP trainees will also be considered.


Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Treatment Planning

    • Maintain the external beam treatment planning service, ensuring plan accuracy and compliance with clinical requirements.
    • Provide advice on physics‑related issues to oncologists and radiographers, contributing to multidisciplinary teamwork.
    • Operate on a rota to resolve problems with clinical plans, inspect patient set‑up, and perform clinical planning room duties.
    • Produce highly complex treatment plans using a 3‑D planning system, critically analyse and independently check plans, and provide monitor‑unit calculations.
    • Manage implementation of new processes and techniques, including work instructions for the quality system.


  • Clinical Dosimetry

    • Maintain, develop and implement QA procedures for linear accelerators and other machines within the ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
    • Participate in the clinical quality‑control programme for complex radiotherapy equipment and act as Duty Physicist on a rota basis.
    • Investigate and resolve technical and dosimetric problems, perform acceptance testing and commissioning measurements, and execute patient‑specific QA.


  • Brachytherapy

    • Contribute to the scientific management of brachytherapy planning systems and equipment.
    • Assist with quality‑control programmes, produce high‑complexity brachytherapy plans, and independently check plans for afterloaders.
    • Perform clinical duties in the brachytherapy theatre, including treatment, set‑up, and cleaning of equipment.


  • Scientific Computing

    • Manage and maintain radiotherapy IT systems, assist with ISO 9001:2015, MDR and risk‑management compliance.
    • Develop bespoke computational tools, scripts and AI/deep‑learning model validation.
    • Analyse large datasets for quality assurance, research and service improvement.


  • Management and Administration

    • Contribute to clinical audit and internal quality system audits.
    • Participate in a continuing professional development (CPD) scheme.
    • Manage day‑to‑day workload, adhere to UK legislation for ionising radiation, and support the Trust’s 9001‑2015 quality system.
    • Work is normally at The Christie, Withington, but may involve other local hospitals.
    • Work as a full‑time, flexible‑hour role to cover round‑the‑clock services.


  • Research & Development

    • Take an active research role aligned with departmental priorities, including RayStation transition and adaptive radiotherapy commissioning.
    • Assist M.Sc. students with project work and present findings at local/national meetings.
    • Publish research in peer‑reviewed journals.


  • Teaching & Training

    • Supervise trainee Clinical Scientists.
    • Deliver specialist teaching on postgraduate MSc courses in collaboration with the University of Manchester.



Qualifications

  • HCPC registration preferred; final‑year STP trainees considered.
  • Experience with radiotherapy IT systems (RayStation, Monaco, Oncentra, Mosaiq, Limbus, ProKnow).
  • Strong communication skills and commitment to continuous professional development.
