Please note: Although this role is being advertised by East Lancashire Hospitals Trust, the role is based at, and working on behalf of, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust properties through the One Lancashire and South Cumbria (One LSC) corporate collaboration.

The Estates department at Furness General Hospital is a group of highly skilled electrical, mechanical and plumbing engineers, creative building craftpersons, and dedicated support staff.

We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Building Services Engineer to join us. You should be either an experienced and time served Electrician, Plumber, or Mechanical Fitter, looking to progress your career.

The successful candidate will work as part of a 24/7 rota - which includes protected rest days - to provide 24/7 Estates cover to the Furness General Hospital and Millom Hospital sites.

Main duties of the job

If you thrive on problem solving, this is the role for you. You will be part of a team which ensures the safe and continuous operation of a major hospital site. This role is challenging and comes with responsibility, but is also highly rewarding.

Daily tasks involve maintenance of building and engineering plant and equipment, in a safe manner, and in accordance with statutory requirements and codes of practice, to a high standard.

Depending on your shift, you could be the department's point of contact for all out of hours incidents and breakdowns, carrying out first line assessment, fault finding, repair, substitute of service and/or safe isolation - as required.

You will be expected to take on the role of (dependant on trade and after full training) an appointed Authorised Person for Estates disciplines such as water, medical gases, electrical safety, ventilation, and decontamination. You will also take on other roles such as being a Fire Controlling Officer - who coordinates the Estates response during a fire or other infrastructure emergency situations.

About us

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, and Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies,daycase and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Person SpecificationQualifications

  • Full Electrical, Mechanical, or Plumbing and Heating apprenticeship
  • Further education in a trade specific field to HNC/HND level
  • A recognised health and safety qualification such as NEBOSH or IOSH

Experience

  • Experience of engineering and building services installations
  • Experience and knowledge of legal, statutory, and non-statutory legislation
  • Experience of supervising and/or training others

Skills

  • Ability to deal with information confidentially and sensitively
  • Ability to work unsupervised including within unsociable hours
  • Excellent communication on all levels
  • Good analytical skill

Personal Qualities

  • Ability to comply with all trust policies
  • Ability to travel between trust sites as required
  • Can demonstrate flexibility in approach to work patterns

£38,682 to £46,580 a yearPer annum, pro rata (pay award pending). Dependant on experience
