Job Summary

Due to maternity leave an opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, motivated and forward‑thinking Physiotherapist with relevant experience to lead the cardiorespiratory medicine team within our dynamic Physiotherapy service at North Bristol NHS Trust. This role will be for 12 months starting around June 2026.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be the team lead ensuring the delivery of a high quality Physiotherapy Service across the Cardiorespiratory Medicine wards, ED, resus, Acute Admission Unit and Intensive Care as required. The post will also be part of the Medicine Physiotherapy Pathway, supporting the development of the service and working as part of the on‑call management team to support education, training and roster administration.


The post holder will provide highly specialist assessment and interventions for a busy and varied caseload, demonstrating advanced clinical reasoning skills and specific knowledge of cardiorespiratory physiotherapy. This role will also support training of staff to gain on‑call competencies on rotation and as part of on‑call duties.


They will take a lead in multi‑disciplinary activities and have highly developed specialist knowledge, communicating complex condition‑related information to patients, relatives and carers. The role will include supporting complex acute patients in busy HDU, respiratory ward areas and assisting in facilitating timely discharges.


The post holder will work closely with the Clinical Leadership Team to support and further develop the Physiotherapy Service and manage the day‑to‑day running of the team.

Job responsibilities

  • To undertake the role of a team leader to plan, co‑ordinate, deliver and evaluate the physiotherapy areas covered by the cardiorespiratory team.
  • To work as an autonomous, highly skilled clinician, providing a specialised service of physiotherapy including assessment, treatment, advice and education for patients, carers/families and staff on the appropriate wards.
  • To be the physiotherapy lead within the multidisciplinary team, providing specialist advice to other professionals and working closely with consultants and MDT to formulate appropriate management plans for patients.
  • To provide appropriate training and education to other health‑care professionals, other physiotherapists and students within the team; to be an expert resource for cardiorespiratory medicine ward patients including chronic respiratory, neuromuscular patients, non‑invasive ventilation, CPAP and tracheostomy weaning.
  • To work with and deputise for the Pathway Lead Physiotherapist and Head of Physiotherapy as appropriate.
  • To identify and lead relevant service development in team, service and division as appropriate.

Person Specification
Essential
Education / Training / Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent Physiotherapy / HCPC registration.
  • Significant CPD in cardiorespiratory medicine.
  • On‑call experience.

Desirable

  • Masters level learning or equivalent experience.
  • Member of a specialist interest group.

Work Experience

  • Significant Band 6 physiotherapy experience in cardiorespiratory medicine.
  • Experience of complex discharge planning and working with community partners.
  • MDT working.
  • Ability and experience of recognising and treating deteriorating ward patients.
  • Service development including QI, audit, research.
  • Supervision of staff and students.
  • Teaching experience – IST, UG etc.
  • Time management.
  • Team lead experience.

Desirable

  • Teaching in areas.
  • Tracheostomy management including decannulation experience.
  • Research / QI work.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Broad knowledge of current best practice across cardiorespiratory medicine.
  • Applied knowledge of current guidelines informing practice in specialist area.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Applied knowledge of the principles of quality governance.
  • Applied knowledge of leadership qualities.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
