About the role

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

We have a unique 12‑month fixed term opportunity for a 0.6 B7 Physiotherapist to join our Paediatric Outpatient Respiratory and Long‑Term Ventilation Teams, covering maternity leave.

We are looking for a highly motivated, skilled, and enthusiastic Physiotherapist (0.6 WTE) with strong problem‑solving skills, broad respiratory experience, and a keen interest in working with children and young people with long‑term respiratory conditions.

The successful candidate will work alongside a team of experienced respiratory paediatric Physiotherapists and an extensive multidisciplinary team (MDT), managing children with long‑term respiratory conditions in a variety of settings. The post provides comprehensive Physiotherapy service provision to children accessing the Children’s Hospital long‑term ventilation service, including admission avoidance and early supportive discharge of complex respiratory patients from the wards, as well as supporting the respiratory element of the regional neuromuscular and wider cardio‑respiratory services.

This post is part of the wider Therapy Services Department and offers many opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge through in‑service training. You will be part of a large department of over 300 Therapy staff, including Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Therapy support staff.

University Hospital Southampton is one of England’s largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations. Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

Key Working Conditions

The fixed‑term post offers the opportunity to work within both acute and community settings and requires the therapist to assess, treat and manage a varied caseload of children with acute and chronic long‑term respiratory needs. Supervision and teaching are essential components of the role. There is a strong expectation that the post holder will take an active interest in service development, audit and research. The ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills is essential for working effectively within this multidisciplinary team.

In addition, you will participate in a comprehensive in‑service training programme and individual performance review scheme. The successful candidate will also be required to participate in the emergency out of hours respiratory rota (adults and paediatrics) as well as the Paediatric respiratory weekend service. The post holder must be able to work flexibly to meet the needs of an evolving service. As caseloads can often include patients who are chronically unwell, we are looking for someone experienced in challenging and emotive situations, with active coping strategies and resilience.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience at B6 or B7 level working in acute respiratory care
  • Comprehensive experience within paediatrics
  • Comprehensive experience with management of patients with LTV/NIV requirements
  • Acute respiratory on‑call/out of hours experience
  • Ability to work flexibly across 7 days, according to roster, including weekend/BH working and active participation in the on‑call out of hours unscheduled acute respiratory service
  • Car driver essential to enable off‑site working / regional clinics / home and school visits and transportation of relevant equipment
  • Clear reasoning given on application form regarding why you wish to work within this specific service, as part of UHS Therapy services

Interview Details
Interviews will be held virtually on Teams on 15th April 2026.

Due to the unique nature of this post we welcome informal enquiries or visits. Please contact Hollie Hull on .

We look forward to hearing from you.

How Many Edge Computing Tools Do You Need to Know to Get an Edge Computing Job?

If you’re trying to start or grow a career in edge computing, it can feel like you’re navigating a maze of tools, frameworks and platforms — Kubernetes, Docker, IoT frameworks, AWS Greengrass, Azure IoT Edge, OpenShift, TinyML toolkits, networking orchestration, real-time streaming frameworks, and on it goes. Scroll job boards and community forums and it’s easy to conclude that unless you master every buzzword imaginable, you’ll never get a job. Here’s the honest truth most edge computing hiring managers won’t necessarily say out loud: 👉 They don’t hire you because you know every edge computing tool — they hire you because you can solve real system problems using the tools you know. Tools matter, yes — but only when they support clear outcomes: reliable systems, performance at scale, secure edge deployments and real business value. So how many edge computing tools do you actually need to know to secure a job? For most edge computing roles, the answer is fewer than you think — and a lot clearer when sorted by fundamentals and roles. This guide shows you what matters, what doesn’t, and how to focus your time wisely so you come across as capable, confident and employable.

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Edge Computing Job Applications (UK Guide)

In today’s fast-evolving tech landscape, edge computing is one of the most sought-after fields — blending distributed systems, embedded systems, networking, cloud, IoT, data and real-time processing. But that also means hiring managers are highly selective. They scan applications fast and look for signals of relevance, impact, technical depth and real-world delivery long before they read every line. This guide demystifies what hiring managers in edge computing look for first in your application — so you can tailor your CV, portfolio and cover letter to jump out of the stack. Whether you’re targeting edge systems roles, embedded IoT edge jobs, edge-native data roles, edge platform engineering or edge-AI positions, this checklist will help you position your experience in a way hiring managers can trust immediately.

The Skills Gap in Edge Computing Jobs: What Universities Aren’t Teaching

Edge computing is rapidly moving from niche concept to critical infrastructure. As organisations deploy connected devices, sensors, autonomous systems and real-time analytics, processing data closer to where it is generated has become essential. From smart cities and manufacturing to healthcare, transport, defence and telecommunications, edge computing underpins systems where latency, reliability and resilience matter. Demand for edge computing skills across the UK is rising steadily — yet employers consistently report difficulty finding candidates who are genuinely job-ready. Despite growing interest and academic coverage, universities are not fully preparing graduates for real edge computing jobs. This article explores the edge computing skills gap in depth: what universities teach well, what they consistently miss, why the gap exists, what employers actually want, and how jobseekers can bridge the divide to build sustainable careers in edge computing.
