Mechanical Design Engineering – Designer, Engineer, Senior Engineer, Principal Engineer

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead or contribute to the development of high-quality mechanical design deliverables, such as equipment layout drawings, detailed component designs, 3D CAD models, calculations, and technical reports.
  • Collaborate closely with multi-disciplinary teams (EC&I, process, and project management) to ensure fully integrated engineering solutions.
  • Apply knowledge of mechanical systemsand industry standards to engineer safe, robust, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Undertake engineering calculations and design validation activities to verify fitness-for-purpose and statutory compliance.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, safety studies, and constructability workshops to drive technical excellence and manage potential risks.
  • Review and check technical documents, drawings, and calculations—supporting continuous improvement of design quality and compliance processes.
  • Share knowledge, mentor junior engineers and designers, and contribute to a proactive learning environment.
  • Support the preparation of technical specifications, project documentation, procurement packages, and client proposals.

Essential Skills & Experience for Mechanical Design Engineers

  • Relevant qualification in mechanical engineering (Degree, HNC, HND or equivalent experience).
  • Proven background in mechanical design ideally within regulated sectors — for example, nuclear, energy, oil & gas, process or heavy industry.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, mechanical systems and assemblies, and plant/equipment design.
  • Experience producing or checking 2D drawings and 3D models using CAD software (e.g. AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar).
  • Knowledge of UK and international engineering standards and statutory regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively—explaining concepts clearly and engaging with diverse teams and clients.
  • Analytical and detail-focused, with problem-solving skills and a drive for continuous improvement.
  • Full UK driving licence or ability to travel to client/project sites as needed.
