SENIOR / PRINCIPAL MECHANICAL ENGINEER

THE ROLE

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join a collaborative, sustainability-driven consultancy at either a Senior or Principal level, depending on your experience. You'll play a key role in delivering complex mechanical building services designs across a varied and prestigious project portfolio — with a clear pathway to progress into a principal and leadership position for the right candidate.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and contribute to the mechanical design of complex, multi-disciplinary building services projects across healthcare, education, commercial and industrial sectors through all RIBA stages
  • Take technical ownership of HVAC, plumbing, drainage and low carbon systems, ensuring designs meet quality, compliance and sustainability targets
  • Act as a key client contact on projects, managing relationships, attending design team meetings and supporting successful project delivery
  • Drive the incorporation of low carbon and net zero solutions including heat pumps, renewable energy systems, district heating and energy‑efficient building services
  • Oversee and contribute to BIM/Revit MEP model development, ensuring full coordination of mechanical services with other disciplines
  • Prepare, review and issue detailed design calculations, specifications, drawings and tender documentation
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers within the mechanical team
  • Support business development activity including bid writing, fee proposals and client engagement (Principal level)
  • Review and quality‑check work produced by others, upholding the highest standards of technical output across the team
  • Carry out site visits during the construction phase to review installations, resolve technical queries and support contract administration
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of Building Regulations, CIBSE guidance, industry standards and emerging low carbon technologies
  • Contribute to the development of internal processes, technical standards and best practice within the mechanical discipline

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering
  • 7+ years' experience in mechanical building services design
  • Strong technical knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, drainage and low carbon systems
  • Proven experience leading projects and managing client relationships
  • Proficiency in mechanical design software, AutoCAD and BIM/Revit MEP
  • Thorough understanding of Building Regulations, CIBSE guidance and industry standards
  • Strong leadership, communication and mentoring skills
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
  • Member of CIBSE, IMechE or similar professional body
  • Experience with low carbon and renewable energy systems (heat pumps, district heating, PV)
  • Experience across healthcare, education, commercial or industrial sectors
  • Business development or bid writing experience
