A leading contractor within the UK water sector is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its established South West team on a permanent basis. With a strong pipeline of secured AMP work and major infrastructure schemes, this organisation continues to play a key role in delivering critical water and wastewater projects across the region.

This position offers the opportunity to contribute to infrastructure that improves water resilience, protects the environment, and delivers long-term benefits to local communities.


The Role

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will take ownership of mechanical design packages across a range of water and wastewater projects, from initial concept through to detailed design and commissioning support. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will ensure solutions are technically sound, efficient, and practical for delivery on site.

The role is based in Bristol, with flexible hybrid working available.


Key Responsibilities

  • Leading mechanical design activities on water and infrastructure projects
  • Preparing and reviewing design calculations, specifications, schedules, and technical documentation
  • Coordinating with civil, electrical, and process engineering teams
  • Supporting construction and delivery teams to ensure buildable, cost-effective solutions
  • Liaising with clients, supply chain partners, and internal stakeholders
  • Providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers
  • Ensuring compliance with industry standards, client specifications, and health & safety requirements


Candidate Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience in mechanical design within the water sector or wider infrastructure environment
  • Strong understanding of pumping systems, pipework, treatment processes, or associated mechanical plant
  • Experience working within a contractor or consultancy setting
  • Ability to manage and deliver design packages independently
  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Chartered status (or working towards) desirable
