Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (RSS) – London or Newcastle

RED Engineering Design, a global M&E consultancy, invites applications for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our London or Newcastle office.


Role Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and coordination of medium‑size projects, acting as the client‑facing engineer for mechanical installations, systems, equipment and facilities.
  • Specify and develop applications of controls, instruments and operating systems for building engineering services.
  • Survey, test and report on existing electrical installations.
  • Ensure manufacturing, construction, installation and operational testing meet functional specifications and client requirements.
  • Make day‑to‑day decisions on project progress, liaising directly with the client and providing technical advice.
  • Represent RED at technical meetings with customers, professional teams and contractor teams.
  • Carrying out engineering calculations to meet robust industry and legal standards.
  • Provide technical content and accuracy support to trainees, graduates and engineers.
  • Validate and check designs and specifications.
  • Support project delivery in accordance with RED’s Project Delivery Process – covering project management, financial management, QA/QC and technical review.

Role Requirements

  • BEng, MSc or equivalent with sufficient experience.
  • MCIBSE/MIEE or HNC/HND plus appropriate experience, or equivalent.
  • Working towards Chartered Engineering status.
  • Competent in specification design/drawing for several building types.
  • Sound knowledge of key health and safety issues and legislation.
  • Knowledge of MS Office applications – Word, Excel, etc.
  • Ability to use IT‑based calculation and spreadsheet software.
  • Good understanding of BS standards.
  • Ability to prioritise own workload and meet deadlines.
  • Managerial skills.
  • Background in consulting or construction preferred.
  • Good understanding of international working and business operations of a global consultancy.
  • Act in an ethical manner and follow the principles of the Ethics Charter and Ethics in Practice Guidelines of the Group.
