Overview

An established engineering organisation specialising in complex mechanical systems is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its design team. The company develops bespoke, high-performance engineered systems supplied to customers worldwide and operates across a full design-to-manufacture lifecycle.

This role focuses on the design and delivery of mechanical sub-systems and assemblies, producing complete manufacturing packages including drawings and bills of materials. You will take ownership of work packages, collaborate closely with project, production, and supply chain teams, and contribute to continuous improvement across products and processes.

The Role

You will be responsible for designing and developing mechanical assemblies and “system elements” for complex engineered systems. When assigned ownership of a work package, you will act as the lead engineer for that scope, managing delivery to time, cost, and specification. The role combines hands-on mechanical design, technical coordination, and close interaction with manufacturing and suppliers.

Depending on project needs and experience level, you may also support production, suppliers, and service teams, and help mentor more junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design mechanical assemblies and sub-systems and produce full manufacturing packages (GA drawings, detail drawings, BOMs, documentation)
  • Ensure designs meet functional, regulatory, and compliance requirements (e.g. relevant machinery and pressure equipment standards)
  • Apply Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfM/DfA) principles, including serviceability and lifecycle considerations
  • Work with project and supply chain teams to agree manufacturing methods and procurement routes
  • Lead or contribute to design reviews and technical decision-making
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including design files, calculations, and compliance evidence
  • Support production and test activities, including build, verification, and troubleshooting where required
  • Contribute to continuous improvement activities, design standards, and engineering best practice
  • When acting as lead for a work package, track progress, manage issues, and communicate status to stakeholders
  • Support risk assessments, method statements, and technical documentation as needed
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree, HND, or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Significant experience in mechanical design within a manufacturing or engineered-systems environment
  • Strong experience using 3D CAD software (SolidWorks or similar)
  • Proven ability to produce high-quality manufacturing drawings and documentation to relevant standards
  • Good understanding of GD&T, limits and fits, and tolerance analysis
  • Experience selecting materials and manufacturing processes to balance cost, lead time, and performance
  • Comfortable working in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment
Technical Skills & Knowledge
  • Experience designing machined and fabricated components and mechanical assemblies
  • Ability to carry out basic stress analysis and engineering checks (e.g. using FEA or hand calculations)
  • Experience building and maintaining BOMs and working with MRP/ERP systems
  • Understanding of compliance, quality systems, and structured engineering processes
  • Proficient with standard office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook or equivalents)
  • Experience updating or working with legacy 2D data is beneficial

New Edge Computing Employers to Watch in 2026: UK and Global Companies Shaping Edge Innovation

Edge computing is transforming how data is processed by bringing compute power closer to the source of generation. With the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT), real‑time analytics, autonomous systems, and latency‑sensitive applications, edge computing has moved from a niche discipline to a core component of digital infrastructure. In 2026, organisations that specialise in or heavily invest in edge computing are expanding their teams to build distributed systems, real‑time analytics platforms, and edge‑optimised AI. For professionals exploring opportunities on www.EdgeComputingJobs.co.uk , understanding which employers are growing, winning contracts, or securing investment is essential. This article highlights the new and high‑growth edge computing employers to watch in 2026, including UK startups, international innovators with a UK presence, and established companies shifting strategy toward edge.

How Many Edge Computing Tools Do You Need to Know to Get an Edge Computing Job?

If you’re trying to start or grow a career in edge computing, it can feel like you’re navigating a maze of tools, frameworks and platforms — Kubernetes, Docker, IoT frameworks, AWS Greengrass, Azure IoT Edge, OpenShift, TinyML toolkits, networking orchestration, real-time streaming frameworks, and on it goes. Scroll job boards and community forums and it’s easy to conclude that unless you master every buzzword imaginable, you’ll never get a job. Here’s the honest truth most edge computing hiring managers won’t necessarily say out loud: 👉 They don’t hire you because you know every edge computing tool — they hire you because you can solve real system problems using the tools you know. Tools matter, yes — but only when they support clear outcomes: reliable systems, performance at scale, secure edge deployments and real business value. So how many edge computing tools do you actually need to know to secure a job? For most edge computing roles, the answer is fewer than you think — and a lot clearer when sorted by fundamentals and roles. This guide shows you what matters, what doesn’t, and how to focus your time wisely so you come across as capable, confident and employable.

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Edge Computing Job Applications (UK Guide)

In today’s fast-evolving tech landscape, edge computing is one of the most sought-after fields — blending distributed systems, embedded systems, networking, cloud, IoT, data and real-time processing. But that also means hiring managers are highly selective. They scan applications fast and look for signals of relevance, impact, technical depth and real-world delivery long before they read every line. This guide demystifies what hiring managers in edge computing look for first in your application — so you can tailor your CV, portfolio and cover letter to jump out of the stack. Whether you’re targeting edge systems roles, embedded IoT edge jobs, edge-native data roles, edge platform engineering or edge-AI positions, this checklist will help you position your experience in a way hiring managers can trust immediately.
