Backend Engineer (Contract) - Cleared Defence AI Programme

Contract | Inside IR35 | £(Apply online only) /day | Hybrid / Secure Site | SC/DV Cleared | UK Nationals Only

3-month renewable contract (likely 9-12 months’ work)

We’re supporting a fast-moving UK-based AI software company that has secured a significant MOD-backed delivery programme. They are building a mission-critical AI capability to be deployed in a secure, environment and they need backend engineering specialists who thrive in complexity.

This is a unique opportunity to build adaptable, containerised backend systems to support real-time inference, transcription pipelines, and natural-language interaction layers, enabling operational decisions in demanding environments.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Architecting and implementing secure backend services to support AI deployments in classified settings

  • Developing transcription ingestion pipelines and real-time insight generation capabilities

  • Supporting graph and RAG-based inference pipelines using structured and unstructured data

  • Exposing robust APIs for frontend engineers to deliver interactive dashboards and NLP-driven workflows

  • Ensuring system portability via containerisation (Kubernetes, Docker)

  • Collaborating closely with data scientists to integrate self-hosted LLMs and analysis models

  • Working with platform engineers to optimise performance in hardware-constrained deployments

    What You’ll Bring:

  • Expertise in Python and/or Go for backend development in secure, distributed systems

  • Experience working with Kubernetes, orchestration tools (e.g., Argo), and message buses like Kafka

  • Practical knowledge of Postgres or similar databases

  • Proven experience building real-time or batch AI/ML pipelines with strong API design

  • (Bonus) Exposure to LLMs, vector databases, transcription pipelines, or RAG systems

  • (Bonus) Prior work in Defence, aerospace, or national security environments

    Why This Project?

This isn’t another generic SaaS deployment. You’ll be building backend systems that enable critical Defence intelligence workflows using leading-edge AI techniques. It's a greenfield challenge within a supportive, cross-functional team and a chance to prove SME-led innovation in the most demanding context.

Where to Advertise Edge Computing Jobs in the UK (2026 Guide)

Advertising edge computing jobs in the UK requires a different approach to most technical hiring. Edge computing sits at the intersection of embedded systems, networking, cloud infrastructure and real-time data processing — and the professionals who specialise in it are a small, highly technical community not well served by general job boards. Candidates with genuine edge and IoT expertise are rarely browsing general platforms, and roles in this space are frequently misunderstood or miscategorised by non-specialist recruiters. This guide, published by EdgeComputingJobs.co.uk, covers where to advertise edge computing roles in the UK in 2026, how the main platforms compare, what employers should expect to pay, and what the data says about hiring across different role types.

New Edge Computing Employers to Watch in 2026: UK and Global Companies Shaping Edge Innovation

Edge computing is transforming how data is processed by bringing compute power closer to the source of generation. With the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT), real‑time analytics, autonomous systems, and latency‑sensitive applications, edge computing has moved from a niche discipline to a core component of digital infrastructure. In 2026, organisations that specialise in or heavily invest in edge computing are expanding their teams to build distributed systems, real‑time analytics platforms, and edge‑optimised AI. For professionals exploring opportunities on www.EdgeComputingJobs.co.uk , understanding which employers are growing, winning contracts, or securing investment is essential. This article highlights the new and high‑growth edge computing employers to watch in 2026, including UK startups, international innovators with a UK presence, and established companies shifting strategy toward edge.

How Many Edge Computing Tools Do You Need to Know to Get an Edge Computing Job?

If you’re trying to start or grow a career in edge computing, it can feel like you’re navigating a maze of tools, frameworks and platforms — Kubernetes, Docker, IoT frameworks, AWS Greengrass, Azure IoT Edge, OpenShift, TinyML toolkits, networking orchestration, real-time streaming frameworks, and on it goes. Scroll job boards and community forums and it’s easy to conclude that unless you master every buzzword imaginable, you’ll never get a job. Here’s the honest truth most edge computing hiring managers won’t necessarily say out loud: 👉 They don’t hire you because you know every edge computing tool — they hire you because you can solve real system problems using the tools you know. Tools matter, yes — but only when they support clear outcomes: reliable systems, performance at scale, secure edge deployments and real business value. So how many edge computing tools do you actually need to know to secure a job? For most edge computing roles, the answer is fewer than you think — and a lot clearer when sorted by fundamentals and roles. This guide shows you what matters, what doesn’t, and how to focus your time wisely so you come across as capable, confident and employable.
