Job Description: Paediatric Complex Care Nurse

We are seeking experienced Paediatric Nurses to support a child with complex medical needs following a traumatic high cervical spinal cord injury and hypoxic brain injury. The child is ventilator dependent 24/7 via tracheostomy and requires a 2:1 nurse-led care package in the home setting.


Clinical Responsibilities

  • Management of continuous ventilatory support via tracheostomy (wet circuit; dry circuit only when well)
  • Full tracheostomy care including suctioning, humidification, tube and tie changes, and emergency airway management
  • Continuous monitoring of respiratory and cardiovascular status with immediate escalation of concerns
  • Use of cough assist, nebulisers, and positioning to optimise ventilation and secretion clearance
  • PEG management including administration of nutrition, fluids and medications
  • Monitoring for aspiration risk, feeding intolerance, reflux and PEG site complications
  • Skilled management of indwelling urinary catheter and monitoring for infection or autonomic dysreflexia
  • Regular skin integrity assessments and pressure injury prevention
  • Safe moving and handling using hoists, with careful handling due to osteoporosis
  • Strict aseptic technique and infection prevention at all times
  • Medication administration in line with prescription and care plans

  • Trauma-informed, child-centred nursing care
  • Consistent caregivers to promote emotional safety and reduce distress
  • Close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams

Working Pattern

  • 12-hour day and night shifts
  • 2:1 nurse-led care

Essential Criteria

  • Registered Children’s Nurse (RSCN / RN Child)
  • Experience in complex paediatric care, ventilation and tracheostomy management (or willingness to undertake specialist training)
  • Confident in recognising and responding to clinical deterioration
