We are seeking skilled and motivated Mechanical Fitters to join our growing team, working in the rail sector. You’ll play a key role in assembling, installing, and maintaining critical systems on rail vehicles, ensuring they meet the highest standards of safety, reliability, and performance.


Job Purpose:

To carry out the assembly, installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical systems and components on rail vehicles or manufacturing equipment, ensuring operational efficiency and compliance with safety standards.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assemble and fit mechanical components such as bogies, couplers, brake systems, and suspension units on rail vehicles.
  • Install and align shafts, bearings, gearboxes, and other mechanical assemblies.
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections on mechanical systems.
  • Diagnose faults and carry out repairs or replacements as needed.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Work closely with engineers, electricians, and other fitters to meet production targets.
  • Maintain accurate records of work completed and parts used.
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or Fitting.
  • Proven experience in a mechanical fitting role, ideally within rail, automotive, or heavy manufacturing.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documents.
  • Good problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Desirable:

  • Experience working to rail industry standards (e.g., EN 15085, RIS-2700-RST).
  • Forklift or crane operation certification.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing or continuous improvement practices.
