The role

As a Mechanical Fitter, you’ll play a crucial role within our Facility Processing team where your skills will support some of the UK’s most important engineering operations. This is hands‑on work that keeps critical mechanical systems running safely and smoothly contributing directly to national security and supporting the Royal Navy’s ability to operate effectively.


You’ll gain experience across a wide range of equipment and systems, carry out maintenance in a specialist environment, and build a career with real purpose. You’ll also join a team committed to engineering excellence, personal development, and continuous improvement.


Day-to-day, you’ll have the following responsibilities:



  • Undertake mechanical fitting activities, repairs and inspections across Facility Processing systems and equipment
  • Complete planned preventative maintenance and nuclear‑implicated tasks to meet business objectives
  • Identify and rectify system defects, manufacturing issues and alterations to maintain system performance
  • Work within all Health & Safety legislation, Safe Systems of Work and Babcock BM&T Clyde policy
  • Make suggestions to improve systems and processes to boost productivity and engineering performance.

This is a full‑time role, 36 hours per week, based on site at RNAD Coulport. Set working times: 07:15 to 16:45, Monday to Thursday, giving you a three‑day weekend.


Essential experience of the Mechanical Fitter

  • Experience within a marine or industrial engineering environment and/or mechanical maintenance
  • Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces and in varied weather conditions
  • Able to understand and interpret engineering drawings and apply strong problem‑solving skills
  • High attention to detail with a focus on quality and fault‑finding
  • Experience of maintenance procedures, risk assessments, COSHH and Safe Systems of Work.

Qualifications for the Mechanical Fitter
Essential

  • Recognised Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship at SVQ Level 3 (or NVQ / City & Guilds equivalent), or
  • HNC or above in a Mechanical Engineering discipline with relevant industry experience.

Preferred

  • Additional training or certifications in mechanical, marine or defence‑related disciplines.

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) clearance for this role.
