A Steadman & Son is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of roofing and cladding profiles, supplying high quality cladding materials across the whole of the UK, offering total roofing and cladding solutions, in a wide range of insulated panels, single and twin skin systems and secondary steelwork including purlins, rails and eaves beams.


We are currently looking to recruit a Mechanical Engineer to join Steadmans, our complete one stop shop for metal roofing and cladding business at Warnell, near Carlisle. You’ll be working alternate early and late shifts to cover the operating hours of the site (06:00 – 14:00 and 14:00 – 22:00). You will be responsible for supporting the maintenance of busy manufacturing processes, including general maintenance and asset care programmes.


What does the role involve?

As a Mechanical Engineer, you’ll be expected to work both on your own initiative and as part of a team, with duties including the repair and maintenance of buildings and factory equipment and completing maintenance schedules in line with the site’s asset care programmes. You will attend occasional breakdowns, undertake safe and efficient repairs and ensure good housekeeping and good manufacturing practice. All work must be carried out competently, safely and efficiently, including compliance Point of Work Assessments and Safe Systems of Work in line with our Zero Harm Policy.
You will also assist with the installation/relocation of services and processes, design and manufacture basic systems to support your role and complete shift reports and the required documentation to support your role.


The successful candidate will require:

  • Either recognised qualifications in a Mechanical related discipline or time served in a recognised Apprenticeship with the ability to demonstrate experience in a similar multiskilled role, or a track record of working within a maintenance environment in a manufacturing industry
  • Excellent demonstrable working knowledge of preventative safety measures, including SSOW/Lock Out Tag Out, in addition to a good understanding of Health, Safety & Environment best practice and policies
  • A good level of experience trouble shooting, fault finding and undertaking corrective diagnosis
  • The ability to demonstrate a good knowledge of mechanical components with both Metric & Imperial tolerances, including understanding drawings showing both measurements
  • Knowledge of pressure systems, including but not limited to hydraulic and pneumatic systems, in addition to knowledge and understanding of machinery processes including process drives, bulk solids and fluid movement systems, including pump and process controls
  • Excellent Communication and numeracy skills, with a very good attention to detail
  • Flexibility, adaptability and the ability to work using your own initiative
  • The ability to build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and work as part of a team
