Fitter overview

At National Grid Mechanical Electrical Fitters are responsible for maintaining a wide range of works on Substation equipment. This work is predominately outdoors and sometimes at height on a mobile platform. You'll join an established team of fitters stripping down and rebuilding high voltage equipment replacing worn/aged components. Maintaining complex HV circuit breakers, transformers, high speed on load tap changers and cable systems, plus all kinds of ancillary equipment such as DC battery systems, air compressors and generators. This work includes installation of new equipment, refurbishment and maintenance of existing equipment, fault investigation and repair as well as routine condition monitoring.


You’ll benefit from our industry-leading training at our facilities based in Eakring, Nottinghamshire and other local substation sites, a training programme will be provided to fill in any skills gaps which will require occasional stays away from home, with generous mobility and overnight allowances. Throughout the year there may be some requirement for weekend work for which overtime will be paid. Personal development is a key part of the way we work and as such you can expect a comprehensive personal development plan.


Requirements:

  • A recognised apprenticeship in Mechanical/Electrical engineering OR an NVQ/Level 3 Mechanical/Electrical qualification with the relevant fitting experience is required.
  • You can demonstrate practical industrial engineering skills - Installations, breakdown, repair and maintenance experience, fault finding, strip down and rebuild, working to Safety Procedures, problem solving and following work specifications to maintain equipment.
  • A Full UK Driving Licence.
  • A good level of computer literacy.
  • You live within 30 minutes travel of East Cardiff.

Desirable

  • High Voltage engineering experience.
  • IOSH / NEBOSH.
  • MEWP Licence.
