Mechanical Design Engineer | M&E Construction (not aerospace, pharma, manufacturing)

Wolverhampton, UK

Full-Time | Office-Based (5 Days Per Week)

Salary: Up to £69,000 DOE


About the Role

My client is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their growing design team based in Wolverhampton.

This is a predominantly office-based role (5 days per week) where you will be responsible for developing and delivering detailed mechanical designs that support safe, compliant, and high-quality installations across a range of construction projects.

Working as part of an established design team, you will play a key role in the coordination and delivery of mechanical building services design from concept through to detailed design and construction stages.


Key Responsibilities


  • Designing in accordance with fire strategy reports, local building regulations and planning authority requirements
  • Attending and contributing to design team meetings
  • Carrying out site surveys of existing installations where required
  • Producing heating and cooling load calculations (thermal modelling) and ventilation calculations using industry software
  • Sizing and selection of AHUs, FCUs, extract fans, pumps, chillers, ASHPs, boilers, plate heat exchangers and associated plant
  • Producing above-ground drainage calculations and system sizing
  • Sizing and selection of domestic hot and cold-water equipment (heaters, storage tanks etc.)
  • Producing pipework and ductwork sizing calculations using recognised industry software or spreadsheets
  • Sizing and selection of firefighting sprinkler and pumping systems (preferred but not essential)
  • Producing stage reports and technical presentations
  • Preparing Designer’s Risk Assessments and Mitigation Reports
  • Producing mechanical layouts and schematics for construction
  • Ensuring designs meet project programmes and delivery deadlines
  • Producing detailed design and survey reports


Requirements

  • Extensive experience within Mechanical Building Services design in the construction sector
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification
  • Strong knowledge of CIBSE guidance and relevant UK / European standards (BS, EN, IEC etc.)
  • Experience using design software such as Hevacomp, Carrier HAP, CyMap, IES or TAS
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced project environment
  • Strong communication and coordination skills
