Position purpose

The MDE Level I is a developing design engineer involved in design phases of projects. They may assume responsibility for elements or kits with supervision and will liaise with the senior engineer. The MDE Level I must develop knowledge of cutting-edge technology in relevant subject areas. An effective MDE Level I will work on developing communication skills and maintain a positive approach to challenges.

  • Ensure safety and quality processes are maintained.
  • Apply standard engineering principles under supervision and guidance.
  • Assess state-of-the-art technologies and industry competition.
  • Maintain good working relationships and instill confidence across the organization.
  • Engage in principles of high-performance leadership and understand their importance.
  • Understand professional and ethical responsibilities as outlined by the Engineering Council: Honesty and integrity; Respect for life, law, the environment and public good; Accuracy and rigour; Leadership and communication.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Lead by example and demonstrate integrity and respect in interactions.
  • Technical Responsibilities
  • Support development of new techniques, improved processes, documentation, or products.
  • Familiar with TAIT solutions across disciplines.
  • Be responsible for project kits or small project elements under supervision of level II/III, SMD/SMDE or Head of Department.
  • Contribute to resolving technical issues using practical and theoretical knowledge.
  • May support the team in mechanical bid preparations.
  • Support design process through assessment and feedback against schedule; alert on deviations to aid resourcing. Develop design from concept to detailed design, reviews and release of production drawings and BOMs.
  • Perform relevant calculations (hand calcs, Excel, FEA, and related software) and review work done by others.
  • Support senior designers/engineers in project management tasks.
  • Assist production with handover meetings, updates from red-lines, and inspections, including planning and supporting Factory Acceptance Testing and inspection visits.
  • Communication skills
  • Demonstrate oral and written communication across TAIT platforms (Outlook, Slack, Zoom).
  • Interact with clients, suppliers and external bodies; represent the company positively and professionally.
  • Participate in departmental project meetings and make presentations as appropriate.
  • Stay informed of interdisciplinary project meetings (kick-offs, post-contract reviews, etc.).

Minimum qualifications – Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Engineering (typically Mechanical), or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Intermediate 3D CAD experience.
  • Committed to Continuous Professional Development and engaged in industry seminars, trade shows and professional bodies’ activities.
