Job Overview

This 4-year apprenticeship offers an excellent foundation for a rewarding career in mechanical calibration engineering. You’ll earn recognised qualifications while gaining hands‑on experience working on Royal Navy submarines.

About The Programme

As a Mechanical Calibration Apprentice, you’ll become a key part of our expert Calibration Services team at HM Naval Base Clyde. You’ll work alongside highly skilled technicians and engineers to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test equipment used to monitor, measure, and maintain complex systems for the Trident and Astute Class submarine programmes.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll develop expertise in this highly specialised field, where precision is key. Working with advanced instruments, you’ll gain the skills needed to calibrate, adjust, and repair equipment to exacting standards. Your daily responsibilities will include calibrating and fine‑tuning test equipment in line with approved procedures, verifying accuracy across a wide range of measurements, and supporting critical safety and performance requirements. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to specialised projects, such as designing calibration setups and producing custom testing accessories like switch boxes.

This apprenticeship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in measurement science and engineering while making a direct impact on the quality and safety of the UK’s defence systems. You’ll thrive in a structured, supportive environment that encourages you to develop and refine your skills, setting you on a path to a successful career in calibration.

Qualifications & Training

As part of your apprenticeship, you will receive training both on‑site and at West College Scotland. Your formal qualifications will be achieved progressively over the course of the programme, as outlined below:

  • Year 1: Full‑time at West College Scotland – SVQ Level 2 (SCQF Level 5) in Performing Engineering Operations; NC Mechanical Engineering – Year 1
  • Year 2: 3 days per week on site at HMNB Clyde and 1 day per week at West College Scotland – SVQ Diploma in Technical Services in Engineering (SCQF Level 7); NC Mechanical Engineering – Year 2
  • Years 3–4: 3 days per week on site at HMNB Clyde (if progressing to HNC) and 1 day per week at West College Scotland – SVQ Diploma in Engineering Technical Support (SCQF Level 7); HNC Mechanical Engineering

Future prospects: Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship programme, you will be able to progress into the role of Industrial Calibrator (salary £38,461) or advance to positions such as Calibration Engineer, Senior Calibration Specialist, line management, or leadership roles.

National Level 5 qualifications (or equivalent) in Maths and English, and a Science or technical subject. Two other qualifications at National Level 4 or 5 or above.

Many of our apprenticeship programmes are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions, which may affect eligibility based on place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency. New Edge Computing Employers to Watch in 2026: UK and Global Companies Shaping Edge Innovation

Edge computing is transforming how data is processed by bringing compute power closer to the source of generation. With the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT), real‑time analytics, autonomous systems, and latency‑sensitive applications, edge computing has moved from a niche discipline to a core component of digital infrastructure. In 2026, organisations that specialise in or heavily invest in edge computing are expanding their teams to build distributed systems, real‑time analytics platforms, and edge‑optimised AI. For professionals exploring opportunities on www.EdgeComputingJobs.co.uk , understanding which employers are growing, winning contracts, or securing investment is essential. This article highlights the new and high‑growth edge computing employers to watch in 2026, including UK startups, international innovators with a UK presence, and established companies shifting strategy toward edge.

How Many Edge Computing Tools Do You Need to Know to Get an Edge Computing Job?

If you’re trying to start or grow a career in edge computing, it can feel like you’re navigating a maze of tools, frameworks and platforms — Kubernetes, Docker, IoT frameworks, AWS Greengrass, Azure IoT Edge, OpenShift, TinyML toolkits, networking orchestration, real-time streaming frameworks, and on it goes. Scroll job boards and community forums and it’s easy to conclude that unless you master every buzzword imaginable, you’ll never get a job. Here’s the honest truth most edge computing hiring managers won’t necessarily say out loud: 👉 They don’t hire you because you know every edge computing tool — they hire you because you can solve real system problems using the tools you know. Tools matter, yes — but only when they support clear outcomes: reliable systems, performance at scale, secure edge deployments and real business value. So how many edge computing tools do you actually need to know to secure a job? For most edge computing roles, the answer is fewer than you think — and a lot clearer when sorted by fundamentals and roles. This guide shows you what matters, what doesn’t, and how to focus your time wisely so you come across as capable, confident and employable.

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Edge Computing Job Applications (UK Guide)

In today’s fast-evolving tech landscape, edge computing is one of the most sought-after fields — blending distributed systems, embedded systems, networking, cloud, IoT, data and real-time processing. But that also means hiring managers are highly selective. They scan applications fast and look for signals of relevance, impact, technical depth and real-world delivery long before they read every line. This guide demystifies what hiring managers in edge computing look for first in your application — so you can tailor your CV, portfolio and cover letter to jump out of the stack. Whether you’re targeting edge systems roles, embedded IoT edge jobs, edge-native data roles, edge platform engineering or edge-AI positions, this checklist will help you position your experience in a way hiring managers can trust immediately.
