Primary Role

  • Fully Qualified Level: W-06 - Level 3 - City & Guilds 6188-30/6188-31/6188-32/6288-31 plus related experience.

We are seeking an experienced technician to install, maintain, repair, and modify large, complex systems for a variety of air conditioning functions, including heating, cooling, humidifying, and filtering. This role also involves responsibility for large heating and power boilers and their associated equipment, controls, and distribution lines. You will plan, layout, and install these varied commercial and industrial systems in facilities such as warehouses, hospitals, and large office buildings. The position requires advanced troubleshooting to diagnose and resolve complex malfunctions in heating boilers, as well as in large-scale commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

Key Skills

  1. Knowledge of combustion, heat transfer, and fuel characteristics for the maintenance of power boilers and heating systems. This role also requires an understanding of air conditioning and refrigeration principles, including refrigerants and temperature measurement. The ideal candidate will apply knowledge of pneumatics, electricity, and basic electronics to locate faults in temperature controls and related devices.
  2. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures; and regulations, procedures, and policies related to records maintenance and documentation.
  3. Skill in performing maintenance on small electric motors, feed pumps, and valves, including replacing brushes, seals, bearings, and repacking valves; servicing power sources and replacing items such as belts, fans, and fuses; installing, aligning, adjusting, and repairing oil, gas, and other burning mechanisms as well as heating boiler components; and skill in dismantling, repairing, balancing and reassembling pumps, impellers, compressors, chillers, receivers and evaporators on large and complex refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems, including replacing major portions of assigned systems.
  4. Skill in reading and applying work orders, blueprints, sketches, and other oral and written instructions.
  5. Skill in the use of hand tools, power tools, precision measuring devices, and a variety of test equipment including special tools such as acetylene torch, ammeters, refrigeration gauges, electronic leak detectors, control devices, vacuum pump, hydraulic press, and micrometers.
  6. Ability to use shop mathematics to compute fuel consumption rates, heat generating units, and air-to-fuel ratios and conversions.

Conditions of Employment

  1. You will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with applicable US and UK laws, rules and regulations.
  2. You may be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft and you may also be required to travel to the US or other country, in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training, this position may also be coded as mission essential.
  3. You will be required to complete a 6-month probationary period.
  4. Overtime may be required.
  5. You may be assigned other duties not included in this position description, but that are appropriate to the grade and skill set of the incumbent. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  6. Shift work may be required.
  7. You may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  8. Emergency overtime may be required.
  9. You may work with hazardous materials such as asbestos or accumulated waste.
  10. You will be required to wear protective clothing and gear on these occasions.
  11. This position requires CFC/NCFC Certification (universal) as required by 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F., EPA. You may be required to complete in-house system familiarization and pass review with DIO Authorized Person (Boilers and Pressure Systems) to gain Skilled Person certification as well as, you are required to maintain appropriate certifications in accordance with US and UK industry standards.
  12. You will require the ability discern colours, contrast, and depth; a pre-employment physical is required for this role. This will be scheduled through RAF Lakenheath.
  13. Your hours of work will be 39 hours per week on a Fixed Schedule (Mon-Fri 07:30-16:00) where start & end times may be modified due to mission needs and in accordance with the organization’s flexible working policies.
  14. The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid Category B driver’s license is required for the position.
