Overview

This is a key, hands-on role within a growing SME. The Finance Manager will own the day-to-day finance function while providing clear, commercial insight to support business decisions. You’ll be as comfortable posting journals and managing cash flow as you are producing forecasts and advising the leadership team.

This role suits someone who enjoys autonomy, variety, and being close to operations rather than managing a large team.

Key Responsibilities

Day-to-Day Finance Operations

· Full ownership of the finance function

· Supervise day to day finance transactions by the team

· Over-see payroll processes

· Maintain accurate financial records and ledgers

· Line manager to finance team (x2)

· Oversee credit control

Management Accounts & Reporting

· Produce monthly management accounts & rolling 3 months forecast with commentary

· Prepare balance sheets, P&L, and cash flow reports

· Ensure timely and accurate month-end close

· Provide clear financial insights to the board

Budgeting, Forecasting & Cash Flow

· Prepare annual budgets and regular forecasts

· Actively manage cash flow and working capital

· Monitor performance vs budget and explain variances

Compliance & External Liaison

· Ensure compliance with statutory, tax, and regulatory requirements

· Prepare information for year-end accounts.

· Liaise with external accountants and HMRC

· Submit VAT returns

· Prepare & submit CIS & P11D

Commercial Support

· Partner with non-finance teams to improve financial understanding

· Support business cases, investment decisions, and growth initiatives

· Improve processes, controls, and systems as the business scales

Skills & Experience

Essential

· Qualified or part-qualified accountant (ACA / ACCA / CIMA or equivalent) or strong QBE background

· Proven experience in a hands-on finance role within an SME

· Strong understanding of management accounts and cash flow

· Comfortable working independently and owning the finance function

· Strong Excel skills and experience with accounting software

· Ability to explain financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues

Desirable

· Experience supporting business growth or change

· Exposure to system improvements or process automation

· Previous experience working closely with founders or owner-managers
