Defence Systems | Flexible-Hybrid | C# | C/C++ | embedded or low-level environments

Some engineering jobs talk about “innovation” then hand you a legacy mess and a Jira board full of damage control.

This isn’t that.

We’re working with a defence-focused engineering business building specialist technology where software genuinely matters. Proper product development. Real hardware interaction. Complex systems. Engineers working with engineers - not layers of process managers pretending to be technical.

They need a Software / Firmware Engineer who can operate across embedded and application-level development without needing their hand held every five minutes.

You’ll be joining a multidisciplinary team designing and developing software that ends up in highly technical, real-world environments. The work covers everything from embedded functionality through to application development, testing, integration and ongoing product improvement.

There’s a strong chance your background sits somewhere between software engineering and electronics. Maybe you’ve worked on embedded systems. Maybe you’ve built robust desktop applications that interact with hardware. Either way, you’ll know the difference between writing code that merely works and writing code that survives in the field.

What you’ll actually be doing:

  • Developing software and firmware for advanced engineering products
  • Working closely with electronics, systems and mechanical engineers
  • Designing, building, testing and maintaining reliable applications and embedded functionality
  • Producing proper engineering documentation - specifications, test procedures, technical records
  • Supporting integration, validation and product improvement activities
  • Contributing to design decisions instead of just implementing tickets
  • Following structured engineering and quality processes without drowning in bureaucracy

The environment:

This is the kind of place where engineers are trusted to think.

You’ll be expected to solve problems, challenge ideas when needed and work with a decent level of autonomy. There’s a process because the sector demands it, but not endless corporate theatre.

The projects themselves sit within a defence-linked environment, so the work carries genuine technical depth and long-term complexity rather than disposable software churn.

What they’re looking for:

  • Strong software engineering fundamentals
  • Exposure to C or C++ within embedded or low-level environments
  • Experience with C# .NET development is a big advantage
  • Understanding of the full software lifecycle
  • Experience with structured design methodologies such as UML
  • Ability to work from concepts through to delivered technical solutions
  • Comfortable working within multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Strong documentation and communication skills

Useful extras:

  • Android/Xamarin exposure
  • Electronics understanding
  • Experience within embedded systems environments
  • Independent verification or test experience
