Thepaediatric Rheumatology service at the Leeds Childrens Hospital is atertiary referral centre for Yorkshire, providing a multidisciplinarymanagement approach to children presenting with a wide range of inflammatoryconditions. As a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist, the post holder willwork in paediatric out-patient clinics, using advanced clinical skills andexpertise to carry out assessment of patients referred to the PaediatricRheumatology service. This will include patients referred with InflammatoryConditions, Back Pain, Hypermobility and persistent pain syndromes

Thepost holder will be expected to refer for appropriate imaging and testing, tofacilitate diagnosis and enable treatment planning, seeking guidance frommedical colleagues where appropriate. Appropriate levels of support will beprovided by a member of the paediatric Rheumatology team, and the post holderwill work closely with members of the nursing, clerical and administrativeteam to ensure delivery of a high quality service to patients and theirfamilies

Thejob holder may be involved in research projects and will be expected to carryout audits of their practice, and of the service

Main duties of the job

Thepost holder will be expected to carry out advanced assessment of childrenreferred to the paediatric rheumatology out-patient service. As a member ofthe paediatric rheumatology team, the post holder will use extensive clinicalknowledge and expertise, to carry out assessment, and refer for appropriatetesting, to facilitate diagnosis and enable treatment planning. The postholder will work to time pressures dictated by the out-patient setting,seeking guidance from medical colleagues where appropriate. The post holderwill communicate with service users, referrers, and the wider MDT, and willmaintain records as an autonomous practitioner. The post holder may beinvolved in research projects and audit.

Aslead clinician for the paediatric rheumatology physiotherapy team, the postholder will provide training, support, supervision and clinical expertise toqualified and unqualified staff and students.

Successfulcandidates will have highly specialised skills in paediatric rheumatologyphysiotherapy, and advanced knowledge and experience of a wide variety ofpaediatric orthopaedic conditions. They will have a high level of knowledgeof other conditions affecting children and young adults, includinginflammatory conditions, back pain, chronic pain.

About us

Thechildrens physiotherapy team is a team of approximately 40 physiotherapistsand physiotherapy assistants who work across Leeds Childrens Hospital. Theyhave a wide scope of experience and enjoy developing and teaching new membersof the team.

Job responsibilities

Tocarry out advanced assessment of children referred to the paediatricrheumatology out-patient service. As a member of the paediatric rheumatologyteam, the post holder will use extensive clinical knowledge and expertise, to carry out assessment, and refer for appropriate testing, to facilitatediagnosis and enable treatment planning. The post holder will work to timepressures dictated by the out-patient setting, seeking guidance from medicalcolleagues where appropriate. The post holder will communicate with serviceusers, referrers, and the wider MDT, and will maintain records as anautonomous practitioner. The post holder may be involved in research projectsand audit.

Thepost holder will act as a role model to the physiotherapy team as a clinicalsource of expertise, promoting quality evidence based practice to support aneffective and efficient service provision in the specialist area.

Thepost holder will be responsible for managing their own caseload within thepaediatric rheumatology service. Responsibility for ensuring all requesteddiagnostic tests are reported on, and actioned, will lie with the postholder. The post holder will work with administrative colleagues to ensurethat access targets are met.

Person SpecificationQualifications
  • Degree in physiotherapy or equivalent
  • Attendance on accredited post graduate courses to masters level or equivalent
  • HCPC Registration
  • Evidence of up to date knowledge and continued professional development
  • Member of CSP
  • Relevant validated clinical courses.
  • Formal management or leadership training

Experience
  • Advanced knowledge and experience of a wide range of diagnoses and treatment approaches, in this area of clinical practice.
  • Broad clinical experience of paediatric Physiotherapy
  • Good working knowledge of all areas of clinical governance including quality, audit and risk management
  • Working knowledge of critical appraisal, audit and outcome measures.
  • Experience of working as a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapists
  • A good understanding of statistics and their evaluation.
  • Competent IT Skills
  • Active member of SIGS group
  • Good knowledge of the research process and the ability to support and develop research activity.
