Job Overview

An exciting, fixed-term opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Physiotherapist to join our highly valued Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Emergency Department (ED) therapies team at University Hospital Southampton, this is back fill for an internal secondment. We are seeking to appoint a dynamic, reliable, and flexible senior therapist who can lead the team alongside existing senior members of the team.


The aims of this flexible and responsive service will be to provide prompt therapy assessments, implement frailty care pathways, facilitate appropriate discharges, and provide acute respiratory cover across AMU and ED.


You will work as part of a team delivering a therapy service from 8am to 6pm across a 7‑day service, including weekends and bank holidays.


You will also be part of our on‑call (out of hours) acute respiratory service working across the Trust, including children and adults in intensive care.


This post is part of the wider Therapy Services department. You will have many opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge through our in‑service training. You will be part of a large department of over 300 Therapy staff, including Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Therapy support staff.


Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

This is an excellent fixed‑term opportunity to work in a friendly, supportive MDT environment with a team committed to improving patient care and experience.


You will support the wider multi‑disciplinary team across AMU and ED which consists of 90 beds in total. Patients present with a wide range of diagnoses and often have multiple pathologies and complex social situations. It is a fast‑paced environment where effective communication, prioritisation and teamwork are essential. Our focus is early assessment and complex discharge planning.


We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic and experienced Physiotherapist, who wishes to develop new leadership skills, whilst specialising in our ED/AMU therapy service, for a 10‑month fixed term, to cover an internal secondment.


We Are Looking For Someone Who Is/has

  • Senior clinical experience in respiratory assessment and treatment of patients in acute care
  • Enhanced leadership skills to work alongside the multi‑professional team
  • Solid foundation in audit, research, personal and service development
  • Confident educator of staff and peer professionals

Essential

  • Robust postgraduate experience of working in the acute hospital setting, including working with a wide variety of diagnoses, ideally within Acute Medical Units or ED
  • Proven senior experience and knowledge in completing comprehensive geriatric assessments
  • Clear expressed desire and clear reasons for working in this fast‑paced clinical area, and within UHS, on your application form
  • Proven respiratory skills (including NIV awareness)
  • Proven experience in acute respiratory on‑call
  • Clear understanding and experience of NHS systems

Desirable

  • Postgraduate experience in supervising other staff and students
  • Evidence of providing teaching to therapy staff and students
  • Demonstrable leadership skills

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience


Essential Criteria

  • Masters in Physiotherapy or equivalent experience: highly specialist skills with relevant levels of study
  • Current HCPC registration
  • Significant relevant clinical experience or the ability to demonstrate significant experience in physiotherapy practice
  • Evidence of proven leadership and supervisory skills
  • Previous experience within relevant clinical area
  • Previous experience on‑call, where relevant to clinical area
  • Experience of working in a multi‑disciplinary team
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Experience of audit, evaluation, or research
  • Evidence of implementing change in a clinical environment

Desirable Criteria

  • Management qualification, or equivalent experience
  • Attendance at post‑graduation courses, or conferences, relevant to clinical area
  • Able to demonstrate sound understanding of healthcare priorities and political agendas
  • Experience working in an acute hospital setting
  • Leadership qualification, or experience
