Overview

Exciting opportunity exists for a dynamic registered nurse to join our dedicated team on the Cardiothoracic Ward. The ward is situated within the Heart and Lung Centre, New Cross Hospital, and is a 31‑bedded in‑patient surgical ward, including a four‑bedded high‑dependency area. Admissions are both emergency and elective patients who require surgery for various cardiac (eg, CABG, heart valve surgery, aortic surgery) or thoracic conditions (eg, lobectomy, pneumonectomy, pleurectomy, decortication).


Qualifications

  • Caring, compassionate nurses with experience who can demonstrate implementation of the 6Cs.
  • Highly motivated with excellent communication skills.
  • Specialist interest in cardiothoracic surgical nursing preferred; transferable experience also welcomed.
  • Proficient in delivering high‑standard, dignified patient care.
  • Must be able to work day and night shifts.
  • Adherence to the NMC Standards of Practice and Behaviour for Nurses and Midwives.
  • Commitment to professional development, including appraisal and revalidation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality nursing care and participate in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the care needs for the patient group.
  • Deliver compassionate, person‑centred care, treating patients, service users, their families and carers with dignity and respect.
  • Provide relevant forms of care with minimal supervision and participate in the supervision, teaching and assessment of unregistered or junior staff and students.
  • Play an active part in the continuing development of the ward or department and contribute to the maintenance of an environment conducive to the delivery of high standards of patient care.
  • Maintain accurate and legible records of care and other documentation in accordance with Trust and professional standards.
  • Prioritise work and manage time effectively, seeking assistance as required.
  • Deliver evidence‑based care, promote the use of evidence‑based practice and refer to Nursing Clinical Practices accordingly.
  • Practice within an ethical framework based upon respect for the well‑being and safety of patients and clients.
  • Ensure efficient and effective use of resources.
  • Report treatment, care and concerns promptly and effectively to senior staff.
  • Liaise effectively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure timely delivery of care.
  • Take personal responsibility for actions and omissions, recognising personal accountability.
  • Report incidents and near misses promptly and appropriately, and take effective action to minimise future risk.
  • Critically appraise and synthesize outcomes of relevant research, evaluations and audits to improve practice.
  • Enhance the patient’s experience and communicate effectively with patients and relatives to promote involvement.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for staff, patients and visitors.
  • Support junior members of staff, unregistered staff and students.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation, policies and protocols including health and safety and clinical governance.
  • Act as a positive health educator, enabling people to maintain independence, choice and control.
  • Undertake Trust and local competencies as required; attend courses and training, including mandatory updates.
  • Participate in the appraisal and revalidation process; recognise personal limitations and pursue professional development.
  • Assist the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse with e‑rostering and ensure compliance with key performance indicators.
  • Act as a positive role model adhering to expected standards of behaviour.
  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of a positive learning environment, including orientation, induction programmes and mentoring.
  • Support effective delivery of the organisation’s objectives and quality and safety agenda.
  • Assist senior staff in monitoring standards of care and contributing to maintaining quality.
  • Undertake any other duties as may be requested to meet the needs of the service within the limitations of the grade.
  • Demonstrate compliance with the pledges of the NHS Constitution 2012 and local professional strategies.
  • Promote a positive image of nursing internally and externally to the Trust.
