Senior Mechanical Maintenance Engineer

Location: Caerphilly


Pay Range: £47,000 (Apply online only) – £48,000 (Apply online only)


Contract Type: Permanent, days role (8am‑4pm)


We are seeking an experienced Senior Maintenance Engineer to join our client's team in Caerphilly. As a Senior Maintenance Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth operation of machinery through preventative maintenance and rapid response to mechanical breakdowns. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled Senior Maintenance Engineer to lead and support a dynamic maintenance team in a fast‑paced environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, organise, and support the maintenance team to ensure minimal downtime and smooth plant operations
  • Manage maintenance and reliability programmes, ensuring work is completed safely, on time, and within budget
  • Continuously improve engineering standards, safety, environmental performance, and equipment reliability
  • Respond quickly to breakdowns, balancing safety, operational, and financial considerations
  • Allocate engineering resources and materials to meet operational and maintenance requirements
  • Plan and schedule maintenance activities to meet production, quality, and legal standards
  • Provide technical support to production and maintenance teams
  • Maintain high safety standards, ensuring compliance with safe systems, permits, and process safety rules
  • Control maintenance spending on labour, materials, and spare parts within the agreed MRO budget
  • Support capital and maintenance projects from design to implementation
  • Develop daily maintenance plans based on operational reviews and coordinate cross‑functional resources
  • Lead root cause analysis, implement corrective actions, and contribute to reliability improvement initiatives (e.g., FMEA)
  • Track and report KPIs (downtime, MTBF, MTTR, shutdown performance, safety) and implement corrective actions
  • Ensure accurate reporting of breakdowns and maintenance history to meet statutory obligations
  • Promote good team relations, manage performance, and encourage continuous improvement and skill development
  • Develop and train team members to ensure coverage, capability, and succession within the department

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a supervisory or technical role within mechanical maintenance
  • Mechanical Engineering Degree, HND, HNC, or equivalent qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 3 or international equivalents for candidates educated outside the UK)
  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical maintenance and engineering principles, including transmission belt inspection, bearing and coupling maintenance, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems
  • Sound knowledge of accounting, stores, and purchasing systems
  • Good understanding of Health and Safety legislation and its application in a continuous process environment
  • Highly proficient in using SAP maintenance systems
