Job Description:

Your impact

At Leonardo UK, we are proud to be at the forefront of Electronic Warfare innovation—developing world-class defensive systems that protect people and platforms across air, land, and sea. Within this cutting-edge environment, our Mechanical Design team plays a crucial role in bringing advanced technologies to life. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for transforming conceptual designs—based on defined requirements—into fully engineered solutions, guiding them through the Mechanical Engineering Product Hardware Development Process. This role involves close collaboration with subject matter experts in pressure, thermal, stress, and environmental analysis to ensure full compliance with technical and regulatory standards. Our designs support a range of products including GCAP, BriteCloud, Praetorian EFA and other Electronic Warfare systems.

From early concept through design reviews, your input will be critical to ensuring design integrity and project success.

Your typical responsibilities as a Senior Mechanical Engineer will include:

  • Performing mechanical design and development using 3D CAD software with a “hands on” approach.
  • Delivering innovative, optimised engineering solutions against requirements, within budget and timescales.
  • Managing own elements of the engineering work package.
  • Formulating prototype designs and producing physical representations.
  • Providing key support to critical technical problem investigations and delivering effective solutions.
  • Contributing towards continual improvement in product manufacturability through effective relationship building and design guidance/liaison with other engineering functions.
  • Preliminary (sizing) structural analyses (hand calculations and Creo Simulate).
  • Supporting visits and meetings at UK sites and suppliers when required.

What you’ll bring

  • Technical or science degree, or equivalent, with demonstrable aerospace related experience in the packaging of electronics.
  • Experience in problem solving and concurrent engineering practices – structured, logical approach to investigate issues and solve problems in an effective cross-functional manner.
  • Experience in mechanical engineering detailed design - first-hand experience of engineering design, analysis, tolerance studies (including GD&T) and generation of technical documentation (including an MBD approach) and data packs to relevant standards including BS8888.
  • Experience and understanding of material selection, machining and manufacturing techniques and employment of them to achieve optimal DFx approaches.
  • High level of competence in the use of CAD tools (preferably Creo).
  • Understanding of ERP, PLM and PDM systems (Teamcenter Unified and SAP experience would be beneficial).
  • Appreciation of fundamental business principles, drivers and key customers with the ability to make effective trade-offs – cost, quality and schedule.
  • Awareness of Mechanical Engineering industry trends - knowledge of new and advancing tools, techniques and technologies.
  • Chartered Engineer registration with a recognised organisation IMechE / RAeS / IED / IET or the equivalent thereof in experience.

This is not an exhaustive list, and we are keen to hear from you even if you might not have experience in all the above. The most important skill is a good attitude and willingness to learn.

Security Clearance

This role is subject to pre-employment screening in line with the UK Government’s Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). An additional range of Personnel Security Controls referred to as National Security Vetting (NSV) may apply, this could include meeting the eligibility requirements for The Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV). New Edge Computing Employers to Watch in 2026: UK and Global Companies Shaping Edge Innovation

Edge computing is transforming how data is processed by bringing compute power closer to the source of generation. With the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT), real‑time analytics, autonomous systems, and latency‑sensitive applications, edge computing has moved from a niche discipline to a core component of digital infrastructure. In 2026, organisations that specialise in or heavily invest in edge computing are expanding their teams to build distributed systems, real‑time analytics platforms, and edge‑optimised AI. For professionals exploring opportunities on www.EdgeComputingJobs.co.uk , understanding which employers are growing, winning contracts, or securing investment is essential. This article highlights the new and high‑growth edge computing employers to watch in 2026, including UK startups, international innovators with a UK presence, and established companies shifting strategy toward edge.

How Many Edge Computing Tools Do You Need to Know to Get an Edge Computing Job?

If you’re trying to start or grow a career in edge computing, it can feel like you’re navigating a maze of tools, frameworks and platforms — Kubernetes, Docker, IoT frameworks, AWS Greengrass, Azure IoT Edge, OpenShift, TinyML toolkits, networking orchestration, real-time streaming frameworks, and on it goes. Scroll job boards and community forums and it’s easy to conclude that unless you master every buzzword imaginable, you’ll never get a job. Here’s the honest truth most edge computing hiring managers won’t necessarily say out loud: 👉 They don’t hire you because you know every edge computing tool — they hire you because you can solve real system problems using the tools you know. Tools matter, yes — but only when they support clear outcomes: reliable systems, performance at scale, secure edge deployments and real business value. So how many edge computing tools do you actually need to know to secure a job? For most edge computing roles, the answer is fewer than you think — and a lot clearer when sorted by fundamentals and roles. This guide shows you what matters, what doesn’t, and how to focus your time wisely so you come across as capable, confident and employable.

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Edge Computing Job Applications (UK Guide)

In today’s fast-evolving tech landscape, edge computing is one of the most sought-after fields — blending distributed systems, embedded systems, networking, cloud, IoT, data and real-time processing. But that also means hiring managers are highly selective. They scan applications fast and look for signals of relevance, impact, technical depth and real-world delivery long before they read every line. This guide demystifies what hiring managers in edge computing look for first in your application — so you can tailor your CV, portfolio and cover letter to jump out of the stack. Whether you’re targeting edge systems roles, embedded IoT edge jobs, edge-native data roles, edge platform engineering or edge-AI positions, this checklist will help you position your experience in a way hiring managers can trust immediately.
