About the Role

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer provides mechanical engineering expertise to support the design, fabrication, and operation of equipment such as Carousels, Tensioners, Reel drives, and Handling Equipment in the offshore and onshore energy industry.


Responsibilities

Deliver Mechanical Engineering Solutions



  • Undertake mechanical engineering activities across projects, including equipment design, design verification and lifting analysis.
  • Preparing, checking and/or approving design calculations, reports, manufacturing drawings, layout drawings, and associated documentation to recognised codes and standards (e.g., DNV, FEM, Lloyds, AISC, LOLER, PUWER, HSAW.)
  • Carry out mechanical analysis and calculations using software such as FS2000/Staad, Mathcad and FEA software.
  • Collaborate and contribute to the compilation of Factory acceptance documents, ensuring equipment is tested in accordance with project requirements.
  • Generate engineering documents in the form of design packages, reports and technical notes.
  • Drive component selection for equipment such as Carousels, Tensioners, Reel Drives, Handling Equipment, Winches and associated equipment.
  • Develop technical drawings in collaboration with Draftspersons.
  • Apply knowledge of deck machinery, lifting equipment and methods to ensure mechanical and structural suitability of designs.
  • Review and incorporate feedback and lessons learned into ongoing designs.
  • Deliver clear and accurate design packages to project.

Collaboration and Communication



  • Strong and effective working relationships with all internal stakeholders.
  • Work closely with the Design, Draughting and Project Engineering Teams to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Liaise with Engineering Manager, Mechanical Design Engineers, Draftspersons and Project Engineers to align on project requirements.
  • Contribute to internal design reviews and inter-disciplinary checks.
  • Liaise with external design standards organisations to achieve design verification.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders to ensure alignment on design scope and deliverables.
  • Support and mentor less experienced members of the team, where applicable.
  • Set the standard, leading by example in terms of professionalism and work ethic
  • Attend project KO meetings as required
  • Attend client meetings as requested.
  • Participate in Sales and Tendering support, support evaluating client RFQ, providing conceptual design solutions for bids, assist in costing.
  • Participate in project FMECA's.
  • Provide technical assessment of mechanical issues during equipment build and offer practical solutions.
  • Provide site support to MDL personnel and clients during site installation, commissioning and Site Integration activities in line with project deliverables

Integrated Management System (IMS), HSEQ & Continuous Improvement



  • Follow MDL Integrated Management System, Policies and Procedures.
  • Contribute to the update and development of IMS policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all engineering output is compliant with applicable HSEQ and technical standards
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering practices and tools
  • Participate in lessons learned and feedback sessions
  • Demonstrate good practice in the checking, approval and storage of all relevant documentation.
  • To show commitment to HSEQ and to set good personal examples on HSEQ issues within their area of operation and influence.
  • To always lead by example and set high standards in all aspects of their role.
  • To actively participate in all aspects of HSEQ awareness, education, training and communication.

Skills and Knowledge

Leadership



  • OneTeam MDL will be looking to the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to provide technical leadership on how to ensure equipment reliability, project success and client solutions to meet the MDL scopes.
  • Ensure positive engagement of stakeholders within MDL & customers by facilitating clear and concise communication channels.
  • Promote HSEQ leadership across all MDL departments.

Knowledge



  • Demonstrable knowledge of engineering, marine and vessel operations including equipment operation, processes, procedures and techniques.
  • Demonstrate skills in engineering solutions, risk identification and problem solving.

Interpersonal Skills



  • Ability to coach and mentor.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and inputs while working across MDL departments to achieve a common goal.
  • Willing to offer technical solutions aligned to meeting schedule and project parameters.
  • Comfortable dealing with internal and external clients.

Qualifications

  • Degree Qualified Mechanical or Marine Engineer preferred or minimum HND in Mechanical or Marine Engineering discipline backed with high level of relevant experience
  • Proven experience in mechanical design of equipment such as Carousels, Winches, Electro-hydraulic handling equipment, Tensioners and Reel Drive Systems.
  • Proficient in structural analysis tools (Mathcad and FS2000/Staad).
  • Comfortable in the use of drafting and modelling packages, such as Autocad and Inventor.
  • Knowledge of DNV, Lloyds, FEM, AISC and relevant mechanical standards.
  • Familiar with Machinery Directive, ATEX Directive, Pressure Equipment, PUWER, LOLER.
  • Experience with fabrication practices and tolerances.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • 5-10 years of experience in mechanical or marine engineering within the Marine, Oil and Gas, and/or Offshore Renewable Industries.
