Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Decarbonisation & Energy Solutions)

Equans UK & Ireland – Manchester (full‑time)


What you will deliver

  • Lead the design of HVAC systems, heat pumps, and building automation for decarbonisation and sustainable retrofit projects.
  • Produce detailed designs from RIBA Stage 2 to 5, including load calculations, equipment sizing, ductwork and pipework layout, schematics, schedules, DSEAR assessments, and technical reports.
  • Integrate mechanical systems with electrical infrastructure and low‑carbon technologies for retrofit and new‑build projects.
  • Support energy modelling and performance simulations using IES, Energy Pro, PVsol, Termis, NEMO, Netsim, and other tools.
  • Lead mechanical design packages on multi‑disciplinary projects; check, QA, and sign off designs according to CIBSE Guides, BS EN standards, and UK Building Regulations (Part L, Part F, Part G).
  • Participate in HAZOP and LOPA discussions and help identify design risks, contributing to risk mitigation and risk register management.
  • Manage the full project lifecycle, ensuring delivery on time and within budget, and conduct design reviews to verify compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Design Management & Team Development

  • Coordinate and manage mechanical and energy system design for seamless project execution.
  • Produce technical reports, drawings, and specifications.
  • Lead client and contractor discussions, including technical presentations.
  • Mentor junior engineers and enhance team capability.
  • Support bids, scopes of work, and fee proposals with commercial awareness.
  • Organise multiple concurrent projects and deadlines effectively.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (BEng or equivalent).
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards.
  • Proven experience in heat‑pump design, low‑temperature heating solutions, and hybrid systems.
  • Experience with heat networks and utilities from feasibility through to connection design.
  • Strong background in mechanical building services design with practical experience.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and familiarity with BIM workflows (Revit desirable).
  • Experience in design management, risk assessment and project delivery of sustainable retrofit, low‑carbon technologies, and energy efficiency projects.
  • Experience working on full RIBA stages in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience in public sector or funding‑driven decarbonisation projects (PSDS, WH/SHDF).
  • Knowledge of electrical building services is an advantage.
