Senior Mechanical Building Services Engineer

RPS Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, United Kingdom

Shape the Future of Sustainable Building Design

This is an exciting opportunity for a technically proficient and forward‑thinking mechanical engineer to take a leading role in the delivery of building services design across a diverse and dynamic portfolio. As Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will be part of a multidisciplinary consultancy environment, working on projects that span energy, infrastructure, healthcare, and education. If you’re passionate about low‑carbon design, technical excellence, and mentoring others, this is your chance to make a meaningful impact and help shape the future of mechanical engineering at RPS Tetra Tech.

Purpose & Scope of the Role

We are looking for an experienced mechanical engineer to lead the design and delivery of HVAC systems, domestic water services, and above‑ground drainage across a range of new‑build and refurbishment projects. You will produce specifications, condition survey reports, and technical documentation while engaging regularly with clients and colleagues across engineering, architecture, and planning disciplines. This role offers a blend of technical leadership, stakeholder engagement, and project management, with a strong focus on supporting the transition to a low‑carbon economy through decarbonisation and grid upgrade initiatives. You will also play a key role in the growth of our Newcastle office and contribute to the national Building Services team.

Mechanical Building Services Experience

You will bring substantial experience in the design and delivery of mechanical building services across sectors such as energy, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and aviation. Your expertise will include HVAC systems, domestic water services, and drainage, with a strong understanding of low‑carbon technologies and sustainable design principles. Familiarity with CIBSE guidance, Part L, and BREEAM is essential, and you will apply this knowledge to ensure efficient, compliant, and client‑focused solutions.

Technical Knowledge and Peer Engagement

This role requires a technically credible engineer who can contribute confidently to interdisciplinary design meetings and peer‑to‑peer technical discussions. You will be comfortable challenging briefs, proposing innovative alternatives, and articulating complex engineering concepts clearly. Proficiency in design software such as Hevacomp, MagiCAD, AutoCAD, Navisworks, and MS Excel is essential, with Revit and IES experience preferable. Your ability to produce accurate models, calculations, and simulations will support informed decision‑making and integration with other disciplines.

Design Experience and Delivery

You will be responsible for producing and reviewing detailed mechanical designs, including spatial planning, thermal calculations, and system coordination. You will oversee drawing production, manage design quality, and ensure that outputs meet client expectations. As a senior member of the team, you will mentor junior engineers, support the development of best practice, and contribute to the continuous improvement of design standards across the business.

Technical and Engineering Problem Solving

You will apply engineering judgement to solve complex challenges, especially in refurbishment and remodelling projects where constraints are more demanding. Drawing on your experience, you will identify practical solutions, improve design efficiency, and propose greener, more sustainable alternatives. Your ability to think critically and creatively will be key to success, as you challenge conventional approaches and demonstrate how alternative solutions can deliver better outcomes for clients and the environment.

Project Management Responsibilities

You will play a central role in managing the delivery of mechanical building services projects, including responsibility for budgets, programme timelines, and quality assurance. You will plan and prioritise workloads across multiple concurrent projects, coordinate resources, and ensure that all deliverables meet agreed standards and deadlines. Your ability to manage client expectations, track progress, and maintain financial control will be essential, particularly on larger or more complex schemes.

Training, Qualifications & Experience

You will hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering, or have significant equivalent work experience. Chartered Engineer status, or working towards chartership with IMechE or CIBSE, is highly desirable. You will have strong knowledge of industry standards and regulations, and hands‑on experience with design software including Navisworks, Revit, AutoCAD, MagiCAD, and IES.

Edge Computing Recruitment Trends 2025 (UK): What Job Seekers Need To Know About Today’s Hiring Process

Summary: UK edge computing hiring has moved from tool‑lists to capability‑driven assessments that emphasise resilient edge architectures, real‑time data pipelines, secure device fleets, container/Kubernetes at the edge, on‑device/near‑edge ML, and measurable business impact (latency, reliability, cost‑to‑serve). This guide explains what’s changed, what to expect in interviews & how to prepare—especially for edge platform engineers, IoT/OT engineers, edge SREs, embedded/firmware engineers, edge AI/ML engineers, network engineers (5G/private LTE), security specialists & product managers. Who this is for: Edge platform/SRE, IoT solution architects, embedded/firmware developers, edge AI/ML engineers, network engineers (5G/SD‑WAN), security engineers (OT/ICS), data/streaming engineers, site deployment/field engineers & edge product managers targeting roles in the UK.

Why Edge Computing Careers in the UK Are Becoming More Multidisciplinary

For years, computing innovation was focused on the cloud. But as demand for real-time analytics, low-latency processing and secure local data handling grows, edge computing has become the next frontier. From autonomous vehicles to healthcare monitoring devices, retail checkout systems to industrial IoT, edge computing is transforming how data is processed and used in the UK. This shift has also changed what it means to work in the field. Edge computing careers are no longer purely technical. They now require knowledge of law, ethics, psychology, linguistics & design, as professionals must consider regulation, human behaviour, communication & usability alongside engineering. In this article, we’ll explore why UK edge computing careers are becoming more multidisciplinary, how these five fields intersect with edge roles, and what job-seekers & employers need to know to thrive in this evolving landscape.

Edge Computing Team Structures Explained: Who Does What in a Modern Edge Computing Department

Edge computing is expanding rapidly in the UK, driven by demands for low latency, on-site processing, IoT proliferation, autonomous systems, 5G, AI inference on devices, and regulatory pressures for data sovereignty. Businesses in sectors such as telecoms, industrial automation, retail, smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and healthcare are pushing computation and intelligence closer to where data is generated. But to design, build, deploy, secure, and maintain edge computing systems requires more than just hardware or software — it requires structured teams with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. If you’re hiring, or applying for roles via EdgeComputingJobs.co.uk, understanding who does what in a mature edge computing department will help you plan better, show relevance in job applications, and build resilient teams. This article covers the key roles in edge computing teams, how they collaborate through the project lifecycle, what skills and qualifications UK employers usually expect, salary benchmarks, challenges and trends, and best practices for structuring effective edge teams.
