Senior Mechanical Building Services Engineer

As a Senior Mechanical Building Services Designer at AtkinsRéalis, you will join our Project & Programme Services team, focusing on prestigious projects across the Midlands. You will support the M+E and NetZero team from the Nottingham office, helping to consolidate and grow our Building Services Engineering offering across the Midlands and neighbouring regions.


The individual will work closely with the Managing M+E Engineer and support the wider team, including assisting with the technical development of junior team members, to support the offering of M&E design and surveying services. You must demonstrate considerable experience within consultancy teams and possess demonstrable knowledge and skills in the Retrofit and Refurbishment of existing buildings, with a key focus on incorporating renewable technologies.


Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Undertake the design and specification of all Mechanical Building Services systems from concept through to detailed design – including heating, cooling, ventilation and public health systems etc.
  • Carry out and support others in the production of detailed calculations using industry standard software tools including Hevacomp and IES.
  • Prepare technical specifications, design reports and presentations.
  • Represent AtkinsRéalis at meetings with clients and other professionals.
  • Conduct condition surveys, inspections and monitoring of installation and commissioning.
  • Manage own workload, ensuring projects are delivered excellently with agreed deadlines and budgets.
  • Assist with technical development of junior team members.

About You

  • Relevant experience in Building Services Engineering and an interest in design excellence for building design.
  • A natural curiosity and an interest in exploring new ways of working.
  • Degree qualified, or equivalent qualification, in Building Services Engineering / Mechanical Engineering, or related subjects.
  • Working towards, or a Chartered Member of CIBSE, IMechE or equivalent body.
  • Experience with calculation software such as IES, Hevacomp, AutoCAD and Microsoft packages. Knowledge of Thermal modelling for building compliance, and building design optimisation would also be beneficial, as would experience with Revit.
  • Detailed knowledge of UK technical standards and codes of practice. Familiar with energy reduction methods and approaches to decarbonising new and existing buildings. Understanding of energy and carbon related data capture and analytics.
  • Competent in designing for measurement and, including experience of commissioning and post‑installation evaluation of performance.
