The Radiotherapy Physics Group provides a specialist clinical scientific service to the Radiotherapy Department at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Radiotherapy service treats ~4000 patients/year across our three sites (Oxford, Swindon and Milton Keynes), housing eight linacs, four CTs and HDR brachytherapy. We offer a comprehensive range of treatment including SABR & SRS. This post combines specialist clinical expertise in Radiotherapy Physics with operational management and leadership. The postholder provides expert clinical advice requiring advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in Radiotherapy Physics. This role also includes leading on a specialised area of Radiotherapy Physics (e.g., radiation protection, computing, automation, imaging modalities etc) dependant on the postholder’s specific skill and experience. Staff Management

  • Line management of Principal/Senior Clinical Scientists/Technologists, including managing sickness absence, disciplinary and grievance matters, recruitment, induction, career development, appraisals, work allocation and personal support for sensitive issues. Management and implementation of rostering including flexible working patterns and annual leave.

Planning and Operations

  • Plan and prioritise activity, direct and deploy staff, and resources as required to meet service demands across three sites (Oxford, Milton Keynes & Swindon). This includes creating rotas to cover flexible shift patterns for highly specialist staff and services; monitoring, modelling, reporting and implementing resourcing vs demand in‑line with current and projected local requirements, national cancer waiting‑time targets and national staffing recommendations; maintaining a system for recording local staff establishment vs budget allocation; contribution to multidisciplinary management arrangements for the Radiotherapy service; radiotherapy incident investigation and handling.

Policy and Strategy

  • With the HoRTP, be responsible for developing and implementing policy and service changes within Radiotherapy Physics and (where appropriate) Radiotherapy, interfacing with other departments where necessary. This includes managing, writing, reviewing and approving quality management system documents and risk assessments.

Financial and Asset Management

  • With the HoRTP, monitor and manage the pay and non‑pay budget for Radiotherapy Physics, provide written justification for expenditures and act as first‑line approver for requisitions.

Interdepartmental Collaboration

  • Take part in multi‑disciplinary service management arrangements with Radiotherapy, Medical Physics and other departments as necessary, including chairing meetings.

Clinical and Technical

  • Expert advice: Act as a Medical Physics Expert in Radiotherapy Physics and ensure high‑quality clinical judgement for highly complex situations is provided in one or more departmental clinical functions (e.g. dosimetry, treatment planning, brachytherapy). Ensure all aspects of the service are provided in accordance with relevant legislation, national guidance, best practice and Trust policies.
  • Specialism leadership: Act as nominated lead for a specialised area of Radiotherapy Physics (e.g., radiation protection, computing, automation, imaging modalities), driving for service improvement in‑line with local development strategies.
  • Equipment Management: Where required, be responsible for the commissioning, calibration, radiation safety, legislative compliance and quality control of radiotherapy equipment.
  • Dosimetry and Treatment Planning: Responsibility for designing, checking and validating patient‑specific radiotherapy treatments. Responsibility for the accuracy and safety of radiotherapy treatment plans, treatment verification, patient dosimetry, and other measurements as required.

Service Development and Improvement

  • Project Leadership: Initiate, develop, and undertake development work, quality improvement and (where appropriate) research to achieve local and Trust objectives. Where appropriate, contribute to the planning of new radiotherapy installations, and manage the specification and selection of equipment in collaboration with other senior staff.
  • Forward Planning: Anticipate the impact of future legislation, technology, NHSE directives and workforce factors on radiotherapy and identify the implications for resources, formulating long‑term strategic plans for policy development.

Teaching and Professional Development

  • Training and Supervision: Be responsible for the training, management and supervision of STP, HSST, PTP, IPEM Clinical Technologist scheme and ACS Route 2 trainees, including the support of any associated equivalence routes to qualification/certification/registration. Be responsible for the supervision, management and training of local staff to become Entitled IR(ME)R 2017 Operators for clinical tasks.
  • Professional Standards: Maintain HCPC registration, MPE certification and an agreed programme of continuing professional development (CPD).
