An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Radiotherapy Service at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust as a Radiotherapy Assistant.


The Radiotherapy Team are looking for self‑motivated, adaptable individuals who are reliable, hardworking and enthusiastic, able to demonstrate initiative and good organisational and communication skills. A sense of humour is an advantage and the ability to integrate well with the existing teams is essential.


The Radiotherapy Assistants will be required to carry out a wide range of duties including patient transfers, clerical work and other supportive functions.

The Radiotherapy Assistant will be responsible for providing a high standard of administrative support and a highly professional, patient‑focused service to the Radiotherapy Service.


The post holder will be responsible for radiotherapy administration including the booking of patients through the radiotherapy pathway, ensuring all associated tasks are completed in accordance with local protocol. The Radiotherapy Assistant will be responsible for transporting patients to and from wards and departments and attending to their needs. The post holder will liaise on a daily basis with a range of staff including radiographers, nursing staff, clerical and secretarial staff, healthcare scientists, consultant clinical oncologists and chemotherapy schedulers.


Key Responsibilities

  • Collect patient prescriptions from pharmacy as required.
  • Carry out patient movement and transfer, taking account of the local policies for manual handling.
  • Care for patients attending the department, helping each patient as necessary such as changing for treatment or examination and attending to basic hygiene needs.
  • Act as a chaperone or supporter for the patient.
  • Maintain and update information on the computer systems as required.
  • Maintain an accurate and up to date database of patients on the radiotherapy pathway.
  • Provide information and reassurance to patients regarding their pre‑treatment or treatment appointment.

Employment Details

This vacancy is a 2‑year fixed‑term post. Hours of work may be flexible and will reflect the needs of the Service. Radiotherapy treatment is routinely delivered between 8.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday, so some shift working may be required.
