Principal Mechanical Building Services Engineer

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Principal Mechanical Building Services Engineer to join a well-established, award-winning building services consultancy in Stockport. This respected practice is recognised for delivering high-quality, sustainable MEP design, supporting clients across healthcare, commercial, and public sector projects. They are at the forefront of net zero and low-carbon building design, using cutting‑edge modelling and engineering software, and are committed to a supportive, collaborative culture.


The consultancy is seeking an experienced engineer to join their senior leadership team, leading projects, mentoring junior engineers, and contributing to the strategic growth of the business.


The Role

As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will manage a range of projects from small specialist schemes to major developments over £100m, ensuring excellence in technical delivery and client engagement.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the mechanical design and delivery of projects across healthcare, commercial, and public sector sectors
  • Acting as a client‑facing technical lead, managing both commercial and technical matters
  • Supporting business development and helping to secure new projects
  • Managing project planning, resource allocation, and delivery
  • Mentoring and developing junior engineers
  • Advising teams on healthcare sector requirements, including HTM and HBN standards
  • Coordinating with other engineering disciplines to deliver multidisciplinary projects
  • Producing detailed designs using IES / IES‑VE, AutoCAD, MagiCAD, and Revit
  • Ensuring designs meet energy efficiency, sustainability, and net zero carbon requirements

About You

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in building services consultancy and the confidence to lead projects and clients effectively. You will ideally have:



  • BEng or MEng in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer status
  • Membership of professional bodies such as MCIBSE or MIMechE
  • Ideally IHEEM membership or healthcare sector experience
  • Knowledge of HTMs and HBNs, or transferable skills from laboratory/cleanroom design
  • 5-10+ years UK consultancy experience in mechanical building services design
  • Experience with new build, refurbishment, and retrofit projects
  • Strong commercial awareness and project management experience
  • Excellent communication skills and client management ability
  • A proactive, flexible approach with a positive, can‑do attitude
