Principal Mechanical Engineer – Data Centres - Bristol


Data Centres are a vital component of modern infrastructure. Our client works with global organisations to design, optimise and future-proof these facilities to ensure resilience, efficiency and sustainability, while supporting the transition to a zero-carbon economy.


They are seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to act as a technical discipline lead, providing strategic, technical and commercial leadership across complex Data Centre projects internationally, based from their Bristol office.


As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will play a senior leadership role within a multidisciplinary engineering environment, taking full ownership of the mechanical discipline on major Data Centre projects.


You will be responsible for:

  • Leading mechanical design delivery from initial brief through detailed design, installation and commissioning support
  • Acting as the mechanical discipline lead on medium to large-scale, complex Data Centre projects
  • Setting technical direction and ensuring the highest standards of design quality and compliance
  • Managing project delivery, budgets, resources and staffing to ensure successful outcomes
  • Building and maintaining strong client relationships, presenting technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Mentoring and developing junior engineers, supporting both technical and professional growth
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams at local, national and international level
  • Supporting innovation, digital development and sustainable design solutions within the Data Centre sector


You will have:

  • A degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering (preferably MSc level)
  • Chartered Engineer status (CIBSE, IMechE or equivalent)
  • Significant experience delivering Data Centre or other mission-critical projects
  • Proven ability to lead complex mechanical design packages from inception to completion
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts clearly through drawings, reports and presentations
  • Competence using mechanical design software and digital engineering tools
  • A genuine interest in sustainable, low-carbon and energy-efficient design
