Principal Mechanical Design Engineer - Building Services (Critical Systems)

Location: Chester (Hybrid Working)


Salary: £60,000 - £70,000 per annum


Job Type: Permanent


An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join a leading building services consultancy working within a specialist critical systems team.


This role offers the chance to lead the delivery of technically complex mechanical building services projects, with a strong focus on Stage 4 detailed design and high-performance engineering solutions.


The successful Principal Mechanical Design Engineer will play a key role in technical leadership, project delivery and team coordination, contributing to innovative and high-quality building services designs across critical environments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Leading the delivery of mechanical building services design projects
  • Producing and reviewing Stage 4 detailed design documentation
  • Developing HVAC system designs, calculations and technical specifications
  • Providing technical leadership across project teams and design delivery
  • Collaborating with electrical engineers, structural engineers and architects
  • Supporting BIM coordination and multidisciplinary design integration
  • Ensuring designs meet industry standards, regulations and client requirements
  • Managing project delivery in line with programme, budget and quality targets
  • Mentoring and supporting junior and intermediate engineers

Requirements

  • Proven experience working as a Senior or Principal Mechanical Design Engineer within building services
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems and mechanical design principles
  • Experience delivering projects across RIBA Stage 4 detailed design
  • Experience working within consultancy or multidisciplinary engineering environments
  • Strong leadership, communication and coordination skills
  • Ability to manage technical delivery and project teams

Desirable

  • Experience working on critical systems or mission‑critical environments
  • Progression towards or achievement of Chartered Engineer (CEng) status
  • Experience using Revit or BIM software
