We are seeking to employ a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team in our award winning London office.

Hilson Moran are interdisciplinary consultants, engineers and advisors, applying progressive design thinking to shape the environments we live in. We provide a full range of engineering services, exciting innovation and design solutions on a wide range of projects from across our network of offices in the UK. Our projects span the globe, from World Cup stadiums in the Middle East and landmarks in London, to luxury hotels in New York and development projects in India.

We are seeking to employ an proactive and enthusiastic Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join our expanding team in London.

As an experienced professional who ideally holds professional accreditation or is actively pursuing it, you will bring an extensive portfolio demonstrating your expertise and capabilities.

You will deliver your design services within a diverse and challenging range of design projects. Your project range Will vary, demonstrating experience across a range of different scales, complexity, sectors, and geographies.

Your Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To

  • Working alongside project leads, managing small individual projects while supporting project coordination.
  • Deliver a range of large complex and niche projects to small ‘Engineering only’ technical projects on time and to the highest technical standard along with management support.
  • Act as discipline lead on projects of scale and complexity.
  • Monitor the quality control on projects to ensure the company quality standards are being achieved, prepare calculations /specifications and drawings, ensuring they comply with the clients brief.
  • Strongly support the day-to-day running of projects, ensuring they are delivered to the highest technical standards.
  • Act as a key client interface at the project level when the Project Director cannot attend. Understand the client’s requirements and align them with the project goals. Encourage clients to call them when they need advice. Tackles Client problems to encourage long-term partnerships.
  • Engage in the Project Directors in marketing activities, including developing a network of contacts within the industry and with clients.
  • Attends evening functions and receptions to reinforce our sales and marketing activities.
  • Assist in the development of fee proposals and presentations.
  • Support your team with quality control on projects and ensure that the company quality assurance and compliance standards are upheld and adhered to in accordance with the Business Management Procedures.
  • Work with the Project lead to evaluate project challenges, identify and develop solutions for new projects, mitigate risks, and develop opportunities in the future.
  • Be present, making yourself visible and available amongst the project team.
  • If applicable, conduct performance assessments, provide constructive feedback, and identify skill gaps and opportunities for learning & development as a line manager.
  • Encourage a growth culture and provide support for early career staff learning and development.
  • Closely monitors the design work carried out by other team members.
  • Provide technical training to staff.
  • If applicable, liaise with the BIM team to ensure they know drawing requirements.
  • Assists the Project Manager in ensuring all additional work undertaken is appropriately identified and additional fees are claimed where appropriate.
  • You will also have the opportunity to be involved in business development, personal and team management and client relations.

We’d like to hear from you if you have

Background & Qualifications

  • MSc or BSc in Environmental or Engineering discipline, with Chartered Engineer status or a strong ambition to achieve chartership through CIBSE or IMechE.
  • Have mechanical engineering experience at a senior level, particularly in commercial projects, including new builds, refurbishments, and fit-outs.
  • Experienced in laboratory, light industrial, and/or hotel developments.
  • Understanding of sustainable building design, renewable energy and low-carbon technology.
  • In-depth knowledge of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 requirements.
  • Expertise in Building Services Engineering Systems, including their performance, application, and operation, gained in a design office setting.
  • Strong analytical skills to influence the drive for continuous improvement.
  • Proactive, adaptable, and approachable engineer with strong client-facing and communication skills at all levels, demonstrating initiative.
  • Experience with design and build projects is advantageous.

  • Demonstrate strong technical expertise through client presentations, building trust and fostering strong internal and external relationships.
  • Review calculations, specifications, and drawings for compliance with client briefs, while supporting the Project Director in managing project finances.
  • Apply technical skills to deliver complex projects, providing guidance and fostering a culture of innovation, creativity, and design excellence.
  • Communicate effectively with senior clients and stakeholders, evaluating project variations and recommending scope, program, and fee adjustments.
  • Promote a collaborative, inclusive work environment that encourages teamwork, knowledge sharing, and problem-solving while ensuring project milestones are met.
  • Exhibit leadership, organisational skills, and financial management expertise in line with best management practices (BMPs).
