We are looking for an enthusiastic, organised and caring individual with good communication and interpersonal skills to join our Emergency Department Therapy Team as the Physiotherapy Team Lead for Same Day Emergency Care.

The post holder will work with the band 8a AMU Clinical Lead, band 7 Physiotherapists Leading AMU and Emergency Department, and the equivalent Occupational Therapy band 7s to lead and develop therapy services within the SDEC at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH). They will also support band 7 colleagues with the wider physiotherapy service at QEH.

The role includes a large clinical caseload, clinical governance activity, supervision and the development of Band 6, 5, 4 and assistant staff within the Emergency Department Therapy Team. The post holder will provide clinical education to undergraduates and coordinate a rolling programme of audit and training within the pathway.

Main duties

The SDEC pathway includes developing practice within the following patient groups: Acute Medicine, Frailty, and Falls.

The post holder should have previous experience in an Emergency Department or Same Day Emergency Care setting, including work with patients presenting with frailty. A commitment to development is required. They will also develop and maintain senior respiratory physiotherapy skills and competence and contribute to supporting respiratory patients within this setting.

The team currently works extended days. The post holder will be required to support shift patterns covering 08:00 to 20:00, across a 7 day rota, with a weekend frequency of 1 in 4.

Job responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE

The Physiotherapy Team Lead for Emergency Department Therapy Team at QEH provides clinical leadership to physiotherapy staff in this pathway. The postholder is an experienced clinician who independently manages a significant clinical caseload and supports other team members.

The postholder, alongside other band 7s, supervises the day-to-day running of the Emergency Department Therapy Team, leads SDEC, and covers ED, AMU and Ambulatory Care as required. They are line managed by the AMU Clinical Lead and Physiotherapy Inpatient Site Lead for QEH.

The team works closely with the Occupational Therapy Team and provides a 7-day service covering extended hours 8:00–18:00. Generic competencies are developing between the two professions.

In conjunction with the Physiotherapy Inpatient Site Lead for QEH and the AMU Clinical Lead, the postholder coordinates a rolling programme of education, clinical evaluation, audit and research within the Emergency Care clinical pathway at QEH. As part of the senior clinical physiotherapy team, they may deputize for the inpatient lead as required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

  • Undertake all aspects of clinical duties with a significant caseload as an autonomous practitioner, including those with complex presentations
  • Work at an advanced level and be professionally and legally accountable for a highly specialised caseload, prioritising for the work area
  • Be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work and local pathway teams’ work, including clinical risk and governance, and knowledge of indications/preca utions in line with national and trust guidelines
  • Assess patient capacity, gain valid informed consent, and work within a legal framework when capacity is lacking
  • Undertake comprehensive assessment and diagnosis of patients with complex presentations using a range of skills
  • Request diagnostic procedures under supervision as appropriate to level and role
  • Undertake physical treatment techniques using advanced manual skills
  • Formulate individualized management programs and evaluate outcomes using recognised measures
  • Provide expert advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers and other disciplines; promote understanding of physiotherapy aims and continuity of care
  • Participate in multidisciplinary/multi-agency meetings and discharge planning as needed
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date clinical records in line with guidance
  • Communicate effectively with patients and colleagues, including those with barriers to understanding; use interpreters when needed
  • Ensure patient-focused practice and incorporate patient views into treatment planning
  • Use skills such as persuasion and motivation to support treatment continuation
  • Communicate complex information empathetically, including prognosis or disability details
  • Receive complex information from patients/relatives and plan accordingly
  • Coordinate discharge planning with referring hospitals or community staff
  • Produce comprehensive patient reports for other disciplines
  • Undertake extended scope role as appropriate and supervised, including independent management of complete episodes of care from referral to discharge
  • Measure and evaluate work through audit and research; implement outcomes within a designated pathway
  • Monitor adherence to professional and national standards and promote evidence-based practice
  • Keep updated with clinical developments and provide expert advice for complex cases
  • Be available for on-call, weekend, bank holiday and extended rotas where appropriate
  • Participate in flexible, including 7-day, patterns of working

All clinical staff are accountable for their own competence and should limit actions to those for which they are competent.

Qualifications and experience

Essential: HCPC registered physiotherapist; relevant postgraduate courses

Desirable: MSc level training; CSP member; Special Interest Group member

Essential experience: comprehensive postgraduate physiotherapy experience including ED/SDEC/frailty; experience in audits and supervising others

Desirable experience: previous Band 7 level experience

Essential knowledge: knowledge of national guidelines and standards; understanding of clinical governance, NHS structure, and legal responsibilities; knowledge of evidence-based practice
