Physiotherapy Assistant – Full Time (37.5 hours per week)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Physiotherapy Assistant to join the Medical Rehabilitation and Frailty physiotherapy team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. This area specialises in the care of older people. Working under the guidance and supervision of qualified physiotherapists you will have the opportunity to implement and progress rehabilitation programmes to optimise patients’ recovery within the inpatient physiotherapy setting.


Job Summary

You will be required to work with patients on a 1:1 basis and carry out duties to ensure the best service delivery to patients. You may also be required to work in other inpatient Physiotherapy teams and contribute to 7‑day working, including bank holidays, on a rota basis. Successful candidates will demonstrate good teamwork, time management and empathy skills. A comprehensive in‑service training programme is provided and we support staff in continual professional development.

Job Responsibilities

The Physiotherapy Technician will work under the supervision of qualified Physiotherapy staff, contributing to assessment and treatment programmes within an episode of care. The post holder will assist in the administration and clerical duties for the team and department, and may be required to work at any of the sites within the Trust. 7‑day working for Therapies is under development within the Trust, and it is anticipated that the post holder will be required to work at weekends on a roster basis.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical

  • To undertake all aspects of clinical duties and to carry a delegated caseload of patients under the direct and indirect supervision of a qualified therapist.
  • Work to departmental SOPs and clinical protocols, deciding priorities for own work area and balancing patient and service demands.
  • Implement and progress programmes of care, assess patient progress and use initiative to suggest changes to treatment plans within agreed competencies.
  • Own competency level, be accountable for all aspects of own work, including clinical risk, governance, and knowledge of indications and precautions of chosen techniques.
  • Assess patient capacity, obtain valid informed consent to treatment, and work within a legal framework in the absence of capacity.
  • Assist the therapist in assessment and progression of treatment for delegated caseload patients.
  • Use recognised outcome measures to evaluate the effect of therapy interventions and ensure programmes are progressing appropriately.
  • Provide information, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers, other disciplines and agencies, promoting understanding of physiotherapy aims and ensuring continuation of the treatment programme.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary/multi‑agency team meetings and case conferences, review patient progress and discharge planning.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive, up-to-date clinical records in accordance with Trust guidance and agreed criteria.
  • Employ suitable verbal and non‑verbal communication skills, facilitating best possible communication outcomes, including use of interpreters or SALT.
  • Ensure that individual practice and that of the local pathway team is user‑focused and incorporates patient views into treatment planning.
  • Use persuasion and tact to gain co‑operation in the continuation of the agreed treatment programme.
  • Communicate empathy and routine patient information, receive patient‑related information from patients, relatives, carers and other professionals.
  • Communicate and advise regarding patient‑related information effectively, ensuring collaborative working with other professionals across health and other agencies.
  • Participate in discharge planning, liaising with referring hospitals or community staff.
  • Participate in measurement and evaluation of own work through audit and outcome measurement.
  • Follow service policy regarding current clinical and service developments.
  • Be accessible and provide clinical information to colleagues.

Education, Training and Research

  • Educate patients/relatives/carers regarding the aims of therapy intervention.
  • Maintain own competency through CPD activities, reflective practice, personal portfolio, and specialist training courses as identified in a personal development plan.
  • Participate in peer review, regular training in pathway and local site, and mandatory/statutory training as required by the Trust and national standards.
  • Assist/support colleagues undertaking higher education, audit and research projects.
  • Contribute to the delivery of a specific in‑service training programme for staff in the designated pathway.

Service Management

  • Work with supervising therapist to manage day‑to‑day workload, maintain level of service within the pathway at the local site, and assist other team members in prioritisation.
  • Use prioritising and time‑management skills to meet unpredictable and conflicting needs of the service.
  • Participate in ensuring clear and open channels of communication within the physiotherapy pathway team, and attend staff and managerial meetings as requested by Team Lead and senior managers.
  • Assist in the management of informal conflicts, disagreements and complaints in the local site pathway using tact and persuasion.
  • Report and document incidents, accidents and complaints within the pathway in an appropriate timeframe, and make senior therapy managers aware of all incidents.
  • Maintain quality of care provided in the designated pathway at the local site, and follow policy within own role.
  • Take responsibility for the regular inspection and safe use of equipment, advise appropriate personnel on review of resources, comply with Health & Safety requirements, and practice safe disposal of equipment.
  • Consider cost/benefit implications in selection and ordering of appropriate equipment for the patient for long‑term use.
  • Maintain accurate and timely activity information, both individually and for the designated pathway, in accordance with local and national requirements.
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of the Trust and therapy service, and undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as requested by the Team Lead.

Service Development

  • Contribute to the development of a designated therapy speciality in line with Trustwide pathway development.
  • Assist in the implementation of service‑agreed policy and service changes for local work area.
  • Contribute to developments within the therapy service and the wider multidisciplinary/multi‑agency team, and participate in related project groups if requested.

Human Resource Management

  • Demonstrate duties to other support workers, provide practical training to less experienced staff, and participate in the trust individual performance review process.
  • Comply with Trust policies and procedures, facilitate effective team working within the pathway, assist and support other team members, and contribute to the clinical induction of therapy staff.

Person Specification
Education & Training – Essential

  • BTEC or HND or NVQ level 2 or equivalent experience in a relevant subject.

Education & Training – Desirable

  • Undertaken relevant healthcare courses.

Experience – Essential

  • Experience in health or social care setting.
  • Experience and ability to work collaboratively within MPT.

Experience – Desirable

  • Previous experience of working within a therapy rehabilitation area either as therapy assistant or equivalent.
  • Experience of an NHS environment.

Knowledge & Skills – Essential

  • Able to demonstrate a base level knowledge of conditions, clinical pathways and therapeutic interventions.
  • Awareness of clinical governance and its implication for therapy.
  • Willingness and ability to undertake multiprofessional competency‑based skills programme.
  • Able to communicate routine information to patients, carers, other health professionals and team.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
