The role

As a Mechanical Fitter, you’ll be at the heart of one of the UK’s most exciting defence programmes — the Type 31 frigate build. This is a hands‑on role where your mechanical expertise will directly contribute to the delivery of cutting‑edge naval capability. You’ll be part of a dynamic team working in bays, manufacturing areas and build halls, installing and assembling critical components that power the Royal Navy’s future fleet.


Day‑to‑day responsibilities

  • Installing pumps, valves, pipework, filters, main engines and mounts
  • Carrying out general mechanical fitting tasks across the build hall
  • Using magnetic base drills and marking out fish plates
  • Interpreting technical drawings and applying torque settings
  • Diagnosing faults and ensuring high-quality workmanship

This role is full time, 36 hours per week and based onsite at Rosyth.


Essential experience

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Experience applying torque settings accurately
  • Proven fault‑finding skills in mechanical systems
  • Background in heavy industry such as marine, oil & gas, automotive, aviation or shipbuilding
  • Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, hands‑on environment

Qualifications

  • Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) clearance for this role.
